Spotty Shooting Hinders Biola

Scoring a total of 13 points between the second and third quarters put the Eagles behind.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Even though Biola played to great quarters on Saturday, the Eagles first game at home in a month did not go as planned.

Twenty-two points in the first quarter and 24 in the second did not provide enough cushion for a combined 13 points between the second and third quarters against Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds gained a two-point lead at the end of the first period thanks to an and-one from Jessica Malazarte and never looked back in the their 77-59 victory.

The loss snaps Biola's 15-game winning streak at home, which dated back to Nov. 2, 2016. It also drops the Eagles to 1-3 in conference play while Fresno Pacific climbs to an even 2-2 record in the PacWest.

Biola started the game off strong and kept paced with the Sunbirds in a first quarter that moved very quickly. Neither team was able to create a lead of more than four points, even though both sides scored over 20 in the period, and senior guard DeMoria White collected 14 points in what seemed like the blink of an eye.

White led all scorers in the contest with 22 points. But she and her teammates found scoring more difficult at the other end of the floor in the second quarter. While Fresno Pacific followed their 24 point first-quarter output with 21 more points. Biola responded with only five makes from the free throw line for its scoring in the second quarter.

The Sunbirds increased their lead by 10 more points at the end of the third quarter, in which the Eagles went 3-of-14 from the field, and basically put the game out of reach for the home team with nine made free-throws in the fourth.

But Biola made its final period something to build on headed into Monday's matchup with California Baptist. The Eagles limited the Sunbirds to 13 percent shooting from the field during the final 10 minutes and scored 24 points themselves on the way to winning the quarter 24-14.

Danielle Kennedy found her range and a sliced her way into the paint for two solid layups for seven points in the quarter. Kennedy had another good game as the scoring burst of the bench for Head Coach Alan Nakamura. The junior guard followed an 11-point performance in Biola's last game with 12 more points tonight on 4-of-9 shooting.

The Eagles turn their attention to their next PacWest contest, which will take place on Monday against California Baptist. Tip-off with the Lancers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Chase Gym.
