LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles improved on their loss to Fresno Pacific on Saturday with Monday's performance against California Baptist.
Biola moved the ball at a better pace and was significantly more active on the boards. But the Lancers responded with their best scoring night of the season and pushed past the Eagles for a 81-62 victory.
The win is CBU's fifth in six games and improves their record to 6-5, 3-1 in PacWest. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team is now 2-7 (1-3 PacWest).
The first quarter was filled with back-and-forth scoring and concluded with Biola up 21-20 when the dust settled. Each team took the lead three times or more in the first 10 minutes and neither side allowed their opponent to build a lead of more than four points.
Senior point guard
DeMoria White got off to a hot start with seven first-quarter point while the Eagles showed they were ready to put in work with six offensive rebounds.
Rebounding was one of the best takeaways for Biola in the loss. The Eagles collected a season-high 41 rebounds and produced an 18-to-8 margin over CBU on the offensive glass. Biola had 14 second-chance points as a result of its efforts and even produce two third-chance scoring opportunities.
The problem was that the visiting Lancers kept pushing the score up through the second period because they had Lexy Ram on their side. After scoring five in the first period, Ram got 14 of CBU's 18 points all by herself in the second period on 4-of-6 shooting from period the arc.
Ram finished with a career-high 27 points on 10 field goals while the Lancers logged season-highs in shooting percentage (55 percent) and assists (26). CBU also dominated the fastbreak points category on Monday night by a total of 20-to-0.
After being overscored by a single point in the first frame, California Baptist won each of the next three quarters.
Not to be overlooked was the fact that Biola four scorers with 10 points or more. Seeing Jazz Benn on that list is essentially automatic during PacWest play as the freshman forward is averaging 12 points per game against conference opponents. Sara Dougan finished one rebound shy of a double-double at 12 points and nine rebounds. And Danielle Kennedy had a nine-point fourth quarter for the second-straight game on the way to 12 points of her own.
The Eagles will head home for Christmas Break before returning to La Mirada shortly after Christmas for their last two games of 2017. Their next game is an exhibition on Dec. 28 at 7:00 p.m. against Cal State Northridge.
