Biola Battles Well With Bakersfield

The Eagles opened their season with an exhibition at Roadrunners.

November 04, 2017

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball had an exciting opportunity to open its season with an exhibition at NCAA Division I CSU Bakersfield on Saturday evening.

The Eagles played the Roadrunners on the unique blue floor at the Icardo Center in a game that will quickly get Biola ready to be in the right mentality for the regular season. The hosting Roadrunners earned an 84-64 victory when all was said and done.

CSUB made it to the NCAA DI NIT Tournament semifinals last season and the NCAA Division I National Championship Tournament the year before that.

Today's game was a chance for 38-year Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist to get a look at his 2017-18 team in full game action outside of scrimmages for the first time. He trotted out a starting five of Tyus Dennis, Trevor Treinen, Michael Bagatourian, Levi Auble and Alex Talma.

Treinen ended up being the team's leading scorer with 15 points on the merit of three made field goals and 7-of-7 free throw shooting. He was one of three Eagles to reach double-digits. Dennis added 12 points in his first game in a Biola uniform. Auble had an impressive 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting in his first chance at taking on an increased role, but he did foul out after 26 minutes on the floor.

Isaiah Jones was also playing his first game in a Biola uniform. He led the team with six rebounds and also had eight points off the bench.

Biola struggled to make shots from the floor, shooting just 38 percent in the game. A lot of that should be contributed to the length and athleticism of the Bakersfield defense. However, the team was nearly perfect from the free throw line, making 28-of-30 for the night (.933). Last season Biola's best free throw output was .926 (25-of-27) in a game against Menlo.

The Eagles' last NCAA Division I exhibition was during the 2015-16 season when they lost 73-53 at San Diego State. The most significant statistic of that game was that the Aztecs outrebounded the Eagles 38-20. Tonight though, it was Biola with the rebounding advantage as they pulled down 33 opposed to the Roadrunners' 32.

Biola's regular season will begin Friday, Nov. 10. The Eagles will play against CSU San Marcos at the CSUSM Sports Center as a part of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge.
