Sharks Find A Second Gear

Hawai’i Pacific pulls away with 70 points in the last 30 minutes.

HONOLULU --- The Eagles had three scorers in double-figures during their first PacWest conference game on Thursday night. But red-hot shooting from the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks was too much to overcome, leading to a 83-60 loss for Biola.

Biola is now 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference after the PacWest opener. The Sharks are now 3-1.

Jazz Benn and DeMoria White had very efficient nights on the offensive end and tied for the team lead and scoring with 18 points. Benn and White both shot 50 percent from the field and went three-for-four from beyond the arc. Benn was also nearly automatic from the charity stripe, shooting 88 percent.

The freshman forward scores five points in the first quarter as Biola erased a 10-3 deficit and evened the score at 13-13 headed into the second period.

At that point the Sharks bench began to turn the tide of the game. HPU's reserves scored nine points in the second period while Biola got one point from the bench, leading the home team to a 14-point advantage at halftime. Brittany Allen and the rest of the Hawai'i Pacific bench finished the game with 33 points en route to the victory.

Six minutes into the second half, the Sharks built their lead up to 20 points and maintained a lead of at least 18 points through the duration of the game.

The Eagles got their first 20-point quarter in the final period, benefitting from the work of Benn, White and Sara Dougan to score the first 11 points of the quarter for Biola. Dougan reached double figures for the third time in the last four games with her 12-point effort on Thursday.

The Eagles will stay in Hawai'i for their second PacWest match. They are scheduled to play Hawai'i-Hilo on Saturday, but the time is still to be determined. Check athletics.biola.edu and Biola's Twitter account (@BiolaAthletics) for updates on Saturday's basketball schedule.
