Eagles Best The WarHawks

Biola finishes day one of pool play 2-0.

KISSIMMEE, Florida --- Biola Volleyball continued to roll right through the competition in the nightcap of day one of pool play at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship. The Eagles beat McMurry (Texas) 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-15) in the final match of the night to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.

Biola didn't drop a set in either match of the first day of competition. They play the No. 2 team and No. 4 team in the pool on Friday. The Eagles trailed 3-1 in the second and 5-3 in the third set, but they never trailed at any other point in the match.

While it was the kills and big swings that led to the victory in the first match, it was other aspects that helped the team to its second sweep of the day. Biola had 10 blocks and allowed McMurry zero. The team also had eight aces to the WarHawks' one.

"I thought our setters and middles were working together so well tonight," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "They were all so focused and executed well. Our defense was also stellar."

Ally Forsberg and Sierra Bauder were outstanding throughout the match. Both players ended with five blocks and were stopping McMurry's athletic attackers all night. Bauder led the effort with 12 kills and hit an outstanding .526. She was hitting over .900 through the first two games.

"We're all really excited. It was a great start for the first day of our tournament," said Forsberg. "We got blocks because we were reading their setter really well and doing a good job of getting our hands over the net."

The Eagles had six players who hit at least .455, including Forsberg's five kills and .500 clip. Other leaders were Karly Dantuma (6 kills - .455) and Alli Beezer (4 kills - .571).

Biola's great serving effort was spurred on by Kaitlin O'Brien. She got herself over 40 aces on the season with a pair in this match. Tess Van Grouw and Bauder also both had two aces.

Van Grouw led the defense that held McMurry to just a .084 hitting percentage and only 30 kills (just 7.5 per set). The senior libero had 25 digs and was flying all over the place, bringing in four more digs than anyone else on the team.

The Eagles are now 24-7 on the season and 2-0 in the tournament. They face Grace College at 7:00 a.m. PT tomorrow and Emmanuel at 1:00 p.m. PT to close out pool play. Emmanuel went 2-0 on day one, Grace was 1-1.

"We're hoping to walk out of here with a national championship," said Van Grouw. "That would mean we have two more games tomorrow and two on Saturday, which would be legit."

NOTE: This win makes it 26-straight over bird mascot teams.
