Eagles Remain Unbeaten

Biola beats Grace in four tight sets to improve to 3-0 at NCCAAs.

KISSIMMEE, Florida --- Biola Volleyball had its toughest test yet on day two of pool play at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championships. The Eagles managed a win to improve to 3-0 for the tournament, but they dropped a set for the first time in the 3-1 victory over Grace College (25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 28-26).

The third and fourth sets were the most intense volleyball we've seen so far this tournament. Biola ultimately staved off four Grace set points to earn themselves an epic win in the fourth set to seal the match.

The Eagles had been down 23-18 and climbed all the way back to tie things at 24 with one of Karly Dantuma's 10 kills in the match. Biola avoided losing the set at 24-21, 24-22, 24-23 and 25-24.

"Very proud of our girls stepping up and battling back in both games three and four," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer.

The third set took just as gutsy a performance from the Eagles as Grace utilized a nine-point run to take a late lead in the set at 20-17. They maintained a lead until Biola rode a five-point streak of its own to end the set. Biola turned a 22-20 deficit into a 25-22 win to jump ahead heading into the decisive first set.

The Eagles did a great job of rallying behind the return of Savannah Hilde and having to play without Sabrina Winslow. Biola had teammates step up all over to execute a tough team win.

Alli Beezer got the call to fill in for Winslow and ended up leading the team with her 13 kills. The senior transfer had just one error on 30 swings to register a .400 hitting percentage. She even got in on three blocks, which is a new season-best.

"I thought Beezer played one of the best matches of her time here," said Seltzer.

For the match, the Eagles posted a .202 hitting percentage compared to Grace's 118. Brinley Beresford's seven kills on .353 hitting was a big contributor to Biola's large advantage there. She played more than she had at any other point in the tournament so far and it paid off with her seven kills, 31 assists and 10 digs.

In addition to Beezer, Dantuma and Beresford, six other Eagles had six or more kills as BU managed 58 altogether as a team. One of those with with six-plus was Savannah Hilde. In her first match since mid-November, Hilde managed six kills on 20 swings and also had 10 digs filling in on the back row.

"We played tough at the end and that was the difference," said Seltzer. "Tess Van Grouw was phenomenal, as usual, and Kaitlin O'Brien and Sami Hover also defended so well."

Biola improved to 25-7 overall and 3-0 in the tournament with its latest victory. The Lancers fell to 22-17 overall and are now 1-2 in pool play. Biola concludes its pool play round with a 1:00 p.m. PT matchup against Emmanuel College (2-0) later on Friday.
