LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a big night for Biola Volleyball on Friday evening as the team clinched its 10th PacWest Conference victory of 2017 with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-11) sweep of the visiting Holy Names Hawks inside of Chase Gymnasium.
The win helped the Eagles keep just one game behind Azusa Pacific for second in the conference with now six matches remaining on the regular season schedule. There's not much time to breathe for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team as they turn around and host Dominican (9-14, 8-7 PacWest) on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The Penguins lost in three in Azusa earlier on Friday.
In tonight's match Biola secured the season sweep over the Hawks and improved to 7-0 in three-set matches this season. The Eagles have never lost to Holy Names.
The first set was the closest of the evening. Despite Biola hitting .429 and the Hawks hitting just .167 the game was decided by only five points. This was because the Eagles committed two service errors and a trio of block error net violations to keep the Hawks close enough to have thoughts of an upset.
Neither of the other sets felt relatively close at all thanks to strong starts by Biola. The Eagles won the first six rallies of the second set and 11 of the first 15. Then, in the third set, the score was even more lopsided in favor of the hosts and
Sara Docktor served up nine points in a row to BU to help the team stake at 12-1 lead.
Biola ended up hitting .403 for the match with 35 kills and just eight hitting errors. The visiting Hawks ended 26-23 in that category and hit just .033. The did exceed their season average in kills-per-set though, thanks to 12 in set one. The .403 team hitting percentage is a new season-best for Biola. The mark breaks the record of .361 set last match.
Coincidentally, this match and Halloween's 3-0 win over Life Pacific both lasted exactly one hour and six minutes.
Stephanie Jewett was the Eagles' leading hitter tonight, claiming a season-high seven kills. She also led all players who played in every set by ending with a .545 hitting percentage. Senior captain Ally Forsberg had the highest overall hitting percentage. She ended with three kills and no errors in two sets to hit .600. Forsberg also was a part of two of the Eagles' three blocks.
Biola improves to 17-6 (10-4 PacWest) with the victory, while Holy Names falls to 0-23 (0-14 PacWest).
It's a big week for Biola's streak of victories over team with bird-related mascots. BU has now won 22 in a row with tonight's defeat of the Hawks. They play Penguins tomorrow and then the Concordia Eagles (14-8, 10-5 PacWest) next week.
