Eagles Ice The Penguins

Biola comes back from down 0-1 to win 3-1 vs. Dominican.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball got knocked down but did a great job of not getting knocked out in its home match with the Dominican Penguins on Saturday night. The visiting Penguins stormed out of the gates to win a surprise 25-13 first set, but then the Eagles rose to the occasion and won the next three sets to clinch the match (13-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21).

It was the first time in program history the two sides had met and Biola did well to earn the win and keep pace in the PacWest Conference standings.

"A win is a win. I will take it," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "Dominican smoked us in game one. I think getting game two was the key for us. It just took us a long time to get things going."

The Eagles were trailing that all important second set 7-3 before turning things around with a stretch of five out of six points to tie things at 8-8. From that point on it was sideout volleyball of sorts until the Eagles took three of four (powered by two Karly Dantuma kills) to earn a set point at 24-22. It took two tries, but on the team's second set point chance Hannah Van Warmerdam came up with a solo block to help the Eagles even the match at one.

Van Warmerdam was critical to Biola's chances this evening, not just in the second set, but all night long. She ended with 10 kills, a new season-high, and was also in on three of the team's seven blocks, also an individual season-high.

"I thought Hannah stepped up and played really well," said Seltzer. "It was a good match for her. She came in and had energy. We needed someone to swing and she was swinging."

Fueled by the momentum of that second set win Biola went out and dominated sets three and four, holding the Penguins to negative attack percentages in both sets (-.030, -.021). Biola hit .106 for the match, which is just about .300 points shy than what the team managed against Holy Names last night, but hey, it worked!

Karly Dantuma (12) and Sabrina Winslow (10) joined Van Warmerdam with double-digit kills. It was a good night on the prowl for Biola's tall lefty Dantuma as she hit .292 and scored kills on half of her 24 swings.

Brinley Beresford was once again lethal with the dump. She had eight kills on a remarkable .462 hitting percentage to go along with her tidy tally of 40 assists.

Thanks to a Dominican attack that hit the ball 147 times in the four sets the Eagles managed to get four players to double-digit digs. Beresford had 13, which is a new season-high and had her just two kills shy of the very rare volleyball triple-double. Tess Van Grouw (21), Winslow (13) and Sami Hover (10) were the others.

"Defensively we just battened down the hatches a bit late in the match," said Seltzer. "We started blocking and digging and getting the to roll and tip, which helped us a lot."

The win pushes Biola to 18-6 (11-4 PacWest) and sinks the Penguins to 9-15 (8-8 PacWest). Biola has a massive matchup coming up this Wednesday as it hosts Concordia-Irvine (15-8, 11-5 PacWest) at 7:00 p.m. Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace is sponsoring the match and giving away 150 free chicken sandwiches at the start of the match.
