Biola's Scoring Comes A Bit Late

Vanguard’s lead absorbs a massive third quarter from Biola.

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Saturday showed that Biola can play with top-caliber teams when it gets in the flow of its game plan. It just took them until the third quarter to get into that flow against the Vanguard Lions, so Vanguard's first half lead led to a loss in the Eagles' second exhibition game of the week, 62-47.

The Lions jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three minutes but ended up leading by that same margin because the Eagles came up with an eight-point run of their own to make it a 12-10 game with two minutes left in the quarter. DeMoria White collected five of Biola's points in that run and finished with 20 points on 16 shots.

Vanguard took its defense to a second-gear in the second quarter, limiting Biola to three points while the Lions added 15. The Eagles only points came on a Brenna Khaw shot from distance with 1:51 left in the half. Khaw was the closest Eagle to a double-double in the game, scoring six points while collecting seven rebounds.

The Eagles really put the scare of a comeback into the home team by scoring 21 points in the third quarter and bringing the game within seven points. Biola sank four three-pointers in the period, which then resulted in layups and points at the charity stripe because Vanguard's defense was forced to overcommit and extend to the three-point line.

Unfortunately, the Lions would not let Biola sustain its momentum through the final period. Vanguard went on a 12-point run after a White layup made the score 47-40 with 7:43 left and maintained its double-digit lead until the buzzer sounded.

The Eagles will play their first countable game on Tuesday evening against Cal Poly Pomona. Tip-off with the Broncos is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
