Broncos Pull Ahead In Second Half

Cal Poly Pomona’s balanced attack turns a two-point game at halftime into a double-digit margin at the buzzer.

POMONA, Calif. --- DeMoria White had a hot-start to her season with 30 points and the Eagles were neck-and-neck with the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos through the first 25 minutes of the play on Tuesday.

But the Broncos pulled away halfway through the third quarter with a 8-0 run and had nine players score in the second half to hand Biola its first loss of the season, 82-64.

It looked like the Eagles were headed in the right direction as they headed into the halftime break. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team was down by six after the first quarter but finished the half shooting a respectable 40 percent from the field and 39 percent from beyond the arc. Biola got five-straight points from Danielle Kennedy to begin the scoring in the second quarter and bring the Eagles within one point of the home team at 20-19.

All eight of Kennedy's points on the evening came in the second quarter, with the other members of the backcourt, White and Tatum Brimley, chipped in five points each to bring the Eagles within two points of CPP at halftime.

Brimley was the Eagles' second-leading scorer on Tuesday with 12 points.

During the break it appears the Broncos focused their halftime adjustments on stopping the other four players on the floor instead of trying to slow White down. The senior from Inglewood scored 14 of the Eagles' 15 points in the third quarter and added six more in the final period to get to 20 in the second half.

But CPP came out smiling in the end because the strategy worked.  White's 20 second-half points only pushed the Eagles total to 30 in the final two quarters while the Broncos scored 46. Nine individual players for CPP scored during the second half while only three Eagles got on the board during that same span.

The Eagles went 19-of-50 from the field when all was said and done, resulting in a .380 field-goal percentage. That fell just short of the .400 field-goal percentage threshold that was such a strong indicator of Biola's success last season. The Eagles shot over 40 percent in 21 of their 23 wins last year.

Biola will return to the hardwood on Thursday night when the Eagles host the Nighthawks of Northwest Nazarene. The Eagles' home opener is scheduled to tip-off at 5:00 p.m. with the men's game against San Diego Christian to follow.
