Eagles Advance To Florida!

Biola Volleyball clinches spot in NCCAA National Tournament.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball had a playoff match at home on Tuesday evening smack dab in the middle of its PacWest Conference regular season. The Eagles hosted Life Pacific in a match to determine the National Christian College Athletic Association West Region champion and came away with a swift 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-23) victory.

The Warriors traveled a great crowd to their final local match of the 2017 season. Life Pacific came in with a 23-9 overall record, but finish the year 23-10 as Biola notched it's 16th victory of 2017.

The three-set win clinched Biola a place in the NCCAA National Championship Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. The tournament is held concurrently with the NCAA Division II and NAIA National Tournament and will feature either an 8-team or 10-team field.

The Eagles earned the victory on Tuesday with a total team effort. The starters made quick work of Life Pacific in the first set as Biola notched its highest attack percentage in a single set so far this season (.444). The Eagles won the set 25-11 on the strength of 14 kills, five service aces and six other LPC errors.

The five first-set aces helped Biola to a 7-1 advantage in that category for the match. Three of them came from Tess Van Grouw within one five-point string. Those five points were a part of the Eagles winning seven in a row to establish a commanding 12-3 lead that would carry the set.

Sets two and three were not quite as clean cut for Biola as LPC managed 17 points in the second and led for nearly the entire third frame before falling 25-23. Biola won nine of the final 10 rallies to flip the decisive set on its head and earn the three-set sweep. It's the Eagles' sixth three-set sweep this season. Seltzer's team is 6-0 in such matches.

Biola's hitters were on the money for most of the night, bombing balls to the tune of a .361 hitting percentage. That too is a new single-match best for the season. The previous best was .342 in a three-set win over Holy Names, who BU happens to play this Friday.

No one Eagle managed double-digit kills tonight, which is a great thing! The team spread the ball around so well that Hannah Van Warmerdam led with eight kills and the next leading attacker was the setter. Brinley Beresford, on her birthday, ended the match with seven kills on .600 hitting, two blocks, seven digs and 35 assists.

Biola's back row, with many, many different players, was excellent on the night. The team held a 52-35 advantage in digs, led by 12 from Tess Van Grouw and Kaitlin O'Brien and 11 from Sami Hover.

With the victory, Biola improves to 16-6 on the season. The team will look to improve on that and its 9-5 PacWest record this Friday night as it hosts Holy Names (0-21, 0-12 PacWest) at 7:00 p.m.
