Concordia Irvine Finds Late Goal

Concordia Irvine converts on a fortunate opportunity.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles threw everything and the kitchen sink at Concordia Irvine on Saturday afternoon, creating the best chances at goal and standing tall on defense for the majority of the match. But the home team found an opening in the 85th minute to send Biola away still hungry.

Carmany Jones scored the match's lone goal for the home team after she got on the end of a leading pass into the 18-yard box. Her quick poke at the ball was just enough to push the ball out of the reach and rest it inside the left post.

The result is a reversal for a Biola team that kept the opposition on their heels for most of the match. Head Coach Erin Brunelle's team allowed just four shots during the first 45 minutes of play and allowed keeper Christina Rodriguez to play most of the half at the top of her box because of the pressure Biola was applying.

The Eagles in red and black manufactured many good chances to score as a result of the pressure they applied. The first threat came at the 20-minutes mark when Sarah Jeffries rifled a shot toward the top of the frame that Kelly Whitcomb was just able to punch onto the crossbar at the apex of her leap.

Biola came out the halftime firing just as it had done in the first. Jeffries created an excellent chance just seven minutes into the second period by taking a from 23 yards out that just sliced to the left of the frame.

Then it almost seemed like the Eagles were guaranteed a goal in the 65th minute when Paula-Marie Labate was challenged 3-on-1 and still created an opening at a vacated net. Labate took her first shot from the left corner of the six-yard box but someone found it rebound right back to her when the CUI defense scrambled to get in front of the net.

As Labate wound up for her second shot, keeper Kaelyn Whitcomb leaped on top of the ball for a save to keep Biola off the scoreboard.

After Concordia Irvine scored 20 minutes later, the home team held Biola at arm's length for the final five minutes to earn three points. CUI improves to 5-2 in PacWest play and 6-4-1 overall. The Biola Eagles sit at 9-3-1 overall (5-3-1 PacWest).

Biola returns to action on Monday for a home match against California Baptist. The opening whistle is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
