Eagles Turn The Tables

Biola benefits from a goal in the 86th minute to tie California Baptist.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Just two days after a late goal halted the Eagles' momentum and resulted in a loss on the road, Biola scored in the 86th minute of Monday to reel in California Baptist for a 1-1 tie.

Senior Samantha Verduzco did the scoring honors on the afternoon, getting her head on a ball that was pinballing in the box and driving it over the goalline for her fifth goal of the season.

"Coming into the second half our team just wanted to come back to either tie or win this game," said Verduzco. "I think we played with a lot of heart and passion and really worked for that corner [on the goal]. We challenged the ball and I was at the right there at the right spot to head it in."

Even in the extremely hot afternoon conditions, both teams started attack the opposing backline very early in the match. In the 10th minute, Sarah Jeffries found an opening in the Lancers' defense and sent a line drive toward goal that keeper Sara Escobedo did well to leap in front of.

Then Christina Rodriguez had to make an athletic save of her own in the 15th minute on a shot from Desirae Felix that was on-target and slicing toward the right post. Rodriguez ended up making eight saves on the afternoon, the highest total she has posted in a calendar month since Biola played Dixie State on Sept. 26.

Around the 23-minute mark the referees stopped play on a California Baptist throw-in to allow the teams a water break. But even with the short delay, CBU continued the momentum of offense it had built by taking the three most recent shots in the match. Just 30 seconds after the restart Brooke Ligtenberg took a shot from distance that kicked off a Biola defender and kangarooed over Rodriguez head for the first goal of the match.

After the score remained the same headed into the second half, the Lancers mounted another push to add a second goal to their lead. The Eagles' defense withstood two cornerkicks and three shots over a 10-minute span early in the second half and did well to prevent any of CBU's shots from being on-goal.

Biola's ability to handle the California Baptist attackers eventually enabled them to launch a counterattack in the 84th minute that created the Eagles' only corner of the period. After Annmarie Alvarez got her head on the initial service from Colie Martin, Verduzco provided the finishing touch that finally sent the ball over the goal line.

Rodriguez ensured the Eagles walked away with at least one point by staying focused between the pipes during both overtimes. CBU rifled two shots-on-goal toward Rodriguez during the 20 minutes of overtime. But the Biola keeper caught both on the fly without seeming to break sweat.

The best chance the home team had to win in overtime came from Margaret Guadarrama in the 105th minute. With Escobedo off her line, Cora Jacoby had to step up to the Guadarrama shot and make the team save to prevent a late loss for the visiting side. Neither team took another shot-on-goal during the final five minutes of the match.

Biola plays its final regular-season match at home on Saturday. Kickoff with Point Loma is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
