SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola traveled to Golden Gymnasium at Point Loma Nazarene for the first time since October 2012 and the Eagles had some sour memories they were looking to get rid of. The Eagles wanted to erase all memory of losing a 2-0 lead and suffering a 3-2 loss to Point Loma in La Mirada just a few weeks ago.
Â
Four of five sets in La Mirada were decided by two points or less. All four sets of Biola's 3-1 win on Thursday were also decided by that narrow margin. The Eagles once again claimed a 2-0 lead, before a set three win from PLNU had the home fans thinking of déjà vu.
Â
The Eagles had a chance to sweep the match, but could not convert on their two match points in the third set. They led set three 24-22 before eventually allowing the Sea Lions to extend the match with a 26-24 lead. All that did was prolong the inevitable though as the Eagles won it in the fourth (25-23, 26-24, 24-26, 25-23).
Â
It was a great job by the Eagles to bounce back and win the fourth to keep the Sea Lions of having any thoughts of replicating what they did in their five-set win last month.
Â
The first two sets on Thursday night were all about the Eagles' ability to come from behind.
Â
In the first, Biola stormed out of the gates, taking an early 5-1 lead to seemingly take control of the match. However, the Sea Lions' attackers got in a groove shortly after and worked their way to 17 kills and a .364 attack percentage in flipping the set and claiming an 18-15 lead.
Â
After that point though, Biola's block took shape and
Sabrina Winslow,
Brooke Watts and
Sierra Bauder began to chip away at the PLNU lead. The Eagles eventually tied the set 21-21, took back the lead at 22-21 and put the set away on their second chance at set point, 25-23.
Â
Winslow was the key to that first set win. She ended with six kills and hit nearly .600. She was also a part of one of Biola's three blocks. The Eagles managed to hit around the block all set long, only getting stuffed once. Watts and Bauder each ended set one with three kills, including Watts' set clincher.
Â
Point Loma built itself an even larger advantage in set two. The Sea Lions led by five points as late as 19-14 in the game. They built the lead aided by some unforced errors by the Eagles, including three service errors. BU had zero service errors in set one.
Â
However, the Eagles shifted the narrative at that point as a
Karly Dantuma kill ended the longest rally of the night and helped BU make it 19-15. From that point on the Eagles would win 12 of the next 16 rallies to earn the 26-24 set two win. BU outhit PLNU .250 to .130 in the tight second set and limited itself to just three attack errors.
Â
Biola was the team with the large lead in the third set, and just as had happened in sets one and two that lead ultimately faded away. BU was up 18-13 before allowing PLNU to win six of seven to tie the set at 19. From then on it was a race to the finish and the Sea Lions ultimately won that race by claiming the final four points of the set.
Â
Set four was back-and-forth from the get-go. The Sea Lions held a lead as late as 19-18, but Biola stuck with what had worked all night long and let the big arm of
Sabrina Winslow carry them down the stretch. She had three kills in the Eagles' final six points and ended the day with a new season-best 21 kills.
Â
It was a Bauder kill that clinched the match on the Eagles' fourth match point opportunity of the evening. Bauder was second on the squad with 13 kills. She, Winslow,
Brooke Watts (11) and
Karly Dantuma (9) were the quartet of Eagles to end with at least nine kills.
Â
BU barely outpaced PLNU in that category with 65 kills to the Sea Lions' 63. The Eagles' outhit the home team .238 to .177 for the match, which was mostly caused by Biola's 13 blocks of Point Loma.
Â
Vanessa Garcia played the bulk of the match at setter and was dangerous for Seltzer's side. She ended with a season-high 40 assists and tied her season-best with four kills, too. Captain
Tess Van Grouw was good as ever in the back row, keeping the Eagles in the match with her 27 digs.
Sami Hover added 18. The Eagles needed to be good in the back as their serve was once again not up to its usual level of greatness and the team had to weather more strong attack opportunities coming from the other side.
Â
The win is Biola's third in a row in PacWest Conference play. The streak began with the Eagles' 3-0 win over Azusa Pacific this past Saturday and now includes wins over Chaminade and PLNU. The Sea Lions have now lost four in a row, all in four sets. BU improves to 11-5 (5-3 PacWest), while Point Loma falls 6-11 (3-6 PacWest).
Â
The Eagles are now tied for third in the conference standings. Next week they head to Northern California to play their next two matches against the bottom two teams in the PacWest, Holy Names (0-8) and Academy of Art (1-8), before ending the week with a tough test in Notre Dame de Namur (6-4).
