Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Saturday night in Santa Barbara was a game featuring two big extremes. Both the No. 3 Biola Eagles and the No. 7 Westmont Warriors had double-digit leads at points throughout the contest, but long scoring runs on both sides led to a more closely contested finish. Westmont ended up improving to 8-0 at home this season with a 93-81 win.
Â
The Eagles were the far better team for much of the first half, but the home team, the Warriors, went on a 23-9 run to end the first 20 minutes and take a 37-34 lead into the half. They then went on to shoot ridiculously well in the second period and would not trail again in the game.
Â
The dagger heading into halftime came from Westmont's Zac Jervis. The freshman found himself alone in the corner with no defender and hit the wide-open three to push the Warriors to a 37-34 lead. It was Westmont's first lead of the game and Jervis' first three-point make of his collegiate career.
Â
The Warriors extended to as large of a lead as 14 points in the second half, because of red-hot shooting. As they built to that large lead they had one particular stretch where they made six field goal attempts in a row despite Biola's top-ranked defense forcing some uncomfortable shots.
Â
Thanks to some hot shooting from
Trevor Treinen and a Westmont technical foul, the Eagles tightened the game all the way down to two possessions with just a minute and a half to play. Five points was as close as it would get though as the Warriors made 11 out of 12 free throws down the stretch to ensure the win.
Â
Treinen was the Eagles' most potent weapon on the floor tonight. He ended up tying his career-high with 21 points. He made four threes and shot 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. He, Tiongson (18) and
Jeff Gonzalez (13) ended up with double-digit scoring for the Eagles.
Â
On the other side, Westmont had a complete team effort with seven players reaching double-digits, led by forward Sean McDonnell leading the way with 14. The Warriors shot 59 percent from the field, including 68 percent (17-of-25) in the second half. That was the highest shooting percentage this year by any Biola opponent. The Eagles had previously held all their opponents under 46 percent.
Â
The implications of this contest could be huge for the 2016-17 Golden State Athletic Conference standings. The Warriors improved to 15-1 (4-0 GSAC) and Biola fell to 15-2 (1-2 GSAC).
Â
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday when they host another challenging test in Hope International (12-4, 2-1 GSAC).
