Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Just 11 short days after their last meeting No. 7 Biola and Arizona Christian went toe-to-toe again on Saturday night inside of Chase Gym.
Â
The Eagles won that first meeting 70-60 in a game that was very similar to the game we had this evening. Biola improved to 21-2 on Saturday night as it came from behind late in the second half and claimed a 72-61 victory.
Â
The win was Biola's sixth Golden State Athletic Conference victory in a row and pushed them back into first place in the conference table. The team took full advantage of a William Jessup loss on Saturday to move one half-game ahead of the Warriors (6-2) and Westmont (6-2).
Â
The two teams played each other close in the first half as both struggled to get shots to fall. Biola ended up going into the halftime break with a slim 32-30 lead, primarily due to their advantage on the glass.
Â
Biola had a 20-16 rebounding lead at halftime, which afforded the team just enough extra possessions to overcome a 38 percent field goal percentage and still have the slim lead.
Â
A bulk of the Eagles' early scoring came from
Caelan Tiongson and
Trevor Treinen. They combined for more than half of the team's first-half points and made seven shots from the floor while missing just five.
Â
As he was all day, Chris Sterling was the stud for Arizona Christian through those first 20 minutes. He led the team in points (10) and rebounds (4) and was often just one or two passes away from the baskets by his teammates as he was a key facilitator too.
Â
Sterling was critical in the Firestorm's quick start to the second half also. He scored the first basket of the second half to immediately knot things up at 32 and then scored seven points and served up two assists as the team went on a run that led to a sizeable 50-44 lead.
Â
That was the largest lead of the game for the Firestorm, but it was almost immediately eliminated as the Eagles began to find their shot mid-way through the half.
Â
Biola scored six points in a row as
Dakari Archer and
Steve Herve got back-to-back baskets in the paint and then
Jeff Gonzalez got fouled trying to do the same and tied the game up by sinking both free throws.
Â
The teams traded baskets over the next three and a half minutes until Biola got the ball back after an Andy Sessions three-point make staring at a 56-58 deficit.
Â
The team was unfazed and drove straight down the floor and Tiongson setup a
Blake Shannon, Jr. three-pointer that gave Biola a 59-58 lead, a lead they would not again relinquish.
Â
Biola was dominant over the final five minutes and 59 seconds as they locked down on defense, made shots on offense and scored 16 of the final 19 points of the game.
Â
Tiongson would end the game as the Eagles' leading scorer. He had 17 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists as he led the team to another solid conference win.
Â
Three other Eagles got into double-digits as Archer ended with 14, Treinen had 12 and Shannon came in with 11. Twelve of Archer's 14 came in the second half as he shook off a challenging first 20 minutes to serve as the team leader Biola needed down the stretch.
Â
Biola has one of its biggest games of the season coming up next as the Eagles host No. 5 Westmont on Tuesday evening. The game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. and be a "Red Sea Night" where Biola fans are encouraged to wear red.
Â
It will also be the team's "Welcome Back Game" as the team welcomes Biola's students back for the spring semester with a bunch of giveaways and fun halftime competitions.
