Eagles Rally in Riverside for 2-1 Win

Biola now has 25 goals through six matches after scoring two unanswered goals at Cal Baptist.

McKenna Marmelstein scored her first game winning goal of the season, and second overall, in a 2-1 Biola win.
Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- With one final match left before conference play commences, Biola Women's soccer headed to Riverside Saturday for a tilt against a California Baptist team that won 75 percent of their home matches last season.

Two unanswered Biola goals after an early Lancers strike would be just enough for Biola to earn the 2-1 victory and come away from non-conference play with six wins and no losses.

Characteristically fast starters, California Baptist notched their fifth first half goal of the season when Miranda Martinez opened up the scoring in the sixth minute. A breakdown in communication from the Biola defense allowed Martinez to push a cross into the net on one touch, just as defender Madyson Brown and goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez collided with each other while trying to stop the run.

The early deficit would not phase a Biola team that was averaging over four goals-per-match entering this contest. The defense dropped anchor for the rest of the first half, especially after the 19-minute mark as the Lancers would only muster one errant shot in the 26 minutes before halftime. Then Biola would get to work knotting up the score headed to intermission with another exhibition of crisp combinations.

After producing a single try at goal through the first 20 minutes, the Eagle attack broke through when Jessie Burns found herself in the penalty area in the 22nd minute. An arching cross from midfielder Janae Megorden dropped in perfectly in front of the senior captain so she could deflect the short hop into the goal to tie the score. The goal was Burns' second of the season and resulted in the second assist for Megorden.

The Eagles would come off the pitch for halftime after a dangerously efficient 45 minutes, producing a goal and forcing three saves on just four total shots. That momentum carried into the second half, as Biola seized the lead eight minutes after the whistle to play.

After a corner kick Ashley Ramirez was initially neutralized, but the second Eagles push to keep the ball around the opponent 18-yard box paid dividends with an unassisted goal from McKenna Marmelstein. Taking the ball for herself from a CBU defender, Marmelstein turned toward goal from outside the penalty area and smashed the ball to the lower left corner.

The match was on lockdown from there despite the 24 shots the Lancers produced in the struggle back. Rodriguez would make three saves and the defense would block two other shots down the stretch to drop California Baptist to 1-3-1 and give the Eagles another feather to put in their cap before the first mid-season poll is released on Tuesday.

The 6-0 Eagles begin conference play at home against Arizona Christian Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
