Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Day one of Biola's two days of volleyball action against the Northern California Golden State Athletic Conference teams we a super success as the Eagles earned a 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-21) win.
Biola remains perfect against GSAC opponents in 2016 and have now won five matches in a row. The Eagles' sweep of the Oaks helped the team earn a 6-0 advantage in the all-time series with Menlo.
"It was another great team win," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "Everybody was engaged and the girls were really, really well prepared."
The first set was the biggest battle of the night as it took the Eagles a few extra points to put away the Oaks. The set was back-and-forth from the very beginning to the final point as neither team held more that a three-point lead at any point.
Biola's preparation and attitude helped carry it to the first set victory as it dug deep in its first home GSAC match of the season.
Hannah van Warmerdam and
Stephanie Jewett each got a kill at the end of the set to put Biola on top.
Van Warmerdam and Jewett both had great nights and ended with 10 kills apiece. They were one piece of the puzzle for a Biola team that was firing on all cylinders all night long. The Eagles had five different players reach double-digit kills.
"Karly [Danutma] and Stephanie did a great job again tonight as our right sides," said Seltzer. "We also served really, really well and our back row played great behind the hitters."
The second and third sets were a bit less cloudy as Biola earned larger margins of victory. The Eagles took control of the second set rather late as they put together six straight points to take a 20-14 lead that would eventually carry to the end.
The third set was all Biola throughout. The Eagles only trailed once in the frame (9-8) and had another long run right in the middle to pave the way to its victory.
"More than anything else I really liked the team's attitude," said Seltzer. "I liked the focus, and I think it is one of the only games I think we've played well from start to finish."
Strong serve-receive from
Tess Van Grouw and
Anna Houser carried the Eagles through the close times throughout the night and helped the Eagles sideout nearly 60 percent of the time. Biola's back row ended the night with 52 digs and allowed just three Menlo aces during the contest.
"Tonight was nice because we were really balanced," said Seltzer. "It is nice when you can move things around and get everyone involved. I think one of the unsung heroes was
Olivia Sorensen. Nothing will really pop out on the stat sheet, but she was moving around all over and really causing chaos for the other side."
Biola improves to 12-5 (3-0 GSAC) with this latest win. The Oaks fall to 5-9 (0-3 GSAC). The Eagles are back at Chase Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. match against William Jessup.
