Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball had its first chance to win its first-ever Golden State Athletic Conference tournament title on Wednesday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. The Eagles squared off against a The Master's College team that earned a spot in the game with a walk-off win earlier in the day.
Â
The Mustangs exploded for 10 runs through the first four innings in building what would turn out to be an insurmountable lead in a 12-6 game. It is a double-elimination tournament and Biola had yet to lose entering the day so the two teams will play again in a winner-take-all game on Thursday at noon.
Â
After the Eagles' three normal starters all got used up over the last two days
Sean McCarrell got the call from Head Coach
Jay Sullenger on Wednesday. It was a tough day for the Eagles' junior submariner as he got tagged for 10 hits and nine runs in two and two-thirds innings.
Â
TMC's starter, Aaron Alexander, held Biola off the board until the top of the eighth inning. The Eagles were hitting the ball well against him all day long, but could only muster three hits through the first seven innings.
Â
It was a leadoff walk by
Jerron Largusa that finally injected a bit of life in the Eagles' offense in the second-to-last inning. He ledoff a frame in which Biola scored four runs on three hits and the benefit of an error.
Â
JD Meyer recorded an RBI single, but the big damage was done when
Alec de Watteville smacked a three-run homerun with one away to help Biola tighten the game to 11-4 at that point.
Â
That was all the offense in the eighth as the Eagles could do nothing with
Jimmy Gallarda's two-out double. However, an unlikely cast of characters led to two more runs for Biola as the comeback fell just short in the ninth. After
Jonas Wellan ledoff the inning with a walk he was forced home by an RBI double off the bat of pinch-hitter
Joey Magro. Then, following a single by
Anj Bourgeois, Magro came home on a sacrifice fly by Meyer.
"It's nice when the bats get going a little bit," said Sullenger. "We haven't broken out on offense yet. We haven't done enough."
Â
The Eagles used three pitchers (McCarrell,
Brandon Valente and
Sean Rothfuss) in the losing effort. Both pitching staffs will be running on fumes tomorrow as they've played four games in three days and will add a fifth as they attempt to win the tournament tomorrow.
