Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Being the lowest seed entering a tournament is not always an accurate assessment of a team's standing within that tournament. No. 5 seed Biola is certainly making everyone take note of that at the 2016 Golden State Athletic Conference tournament.
Â
Tuesday's 3-2 win over The Master's College gives the Eagles three wins in a row and puts them a win away from the championship and a national tournament berth. Two homeruns from
JD Meyer provided all the Biola offense in this one and helped BU overcome a deficit for a late come-from-behind victory.
Â
The win helped the Eagles improve to 3-1 against The Master's College Mustangs this season and advanced the team to the tournament championship game as the only team in the tournament without a loss.
Â
The game was about as intense of an affair as any baseball fan could hope for as two starting pitchers duked it out for seven innings in a low scoring, nail biting type of game.
Â
Micah Beyer took the ball to start the game for the Eagles. He allowed two runs over the course of 7.1 innings of work and held the hot bats of TMC, who scored eight runs yesterday, to just three hits while striking out nine.
Â
"
Micah Beyer pitched us to championship day with that effort," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger. "The team continues to play great baseball."
Â
His counterpart, Brad Lohse, was almost as good as he allowed just four hits to the Eagles' offense through his seven innings of work. One of those four hits was a solo homerun to Meyer in the bottom of the sixth that got Biola on the board as it began to climb back from the early 0-2 deficit.
Â
"The team still did not give in and found a way stay in it even with Lohse's performance," said Sullenger.
Â
Then, after getting retired in order in the bottom of the seventh and hitting a groundout to begin the eighth inning,
Sam Thorne hit a single past the shortstop and was driven home by another Meyer homerun as Biola took the lead.
Â
"Sam worked well with Micah today and battled with two strikes to get on, and then Meyer finished the job with another great swing," said Sullenger.
Â
With the lead in tow
Buddy Brouwer handed the ball over to
Daniel Jang as the shortstop tried for his third save in the last two days. He was perfect as he struck out two and induced a groundout to end the inning in order and secure the Eagles a place in the championship series.
Â
Biola will face Westmont, The Master's College or Menlo in the championship series, which begins Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Russ Carr Field. The Eagles need one win to wrap up the tournament win, while their opponent will need to win twice in order to knock Biola out.
Biola is seeking its first Golden State Athletic Conference tournament title. It is the first time the Eagles have been in the championship segment of this tournament since 2011.
