Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- This baseball season just continues to get better and better and better as the year rolls along. Biola took two from San Diego Christian on Friday to ensure its ninth series in a row without suffering a series loss.
Â
It took 13 innings to decide the first one as a
JD Meyer RBI double won the game 10-9 in the bottom of the 13
th, and then a complete game shutout from
Jimmy Gallarda wrapped a nice, tidy 2-0 bow around a game two win.
Â
With the two victories the Eagles improve to 18-4 since the start of March and are now tied for third place in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings with a 12-8 mark. Biola has played two fewer conference games than The Master's College team it is tied with. With today's two victories Biola successfully eclipsed its win total of 22 from 2015 and still has 11 regular season games, and hopefully the GSAC Tournament, left on its schedule.
Â
Today's contests were two very different ballgames as offense dominated the opener, but the two teams combined for just 10 total hits in game two.
Â
Game one was seemingly in Biola's control as the home team took a 9-5 lead into the ninth inning. The Eagles did all of their scoring in the fourth through sixth innings as they forced Landon Burt, SDC's head coach, to dig deep into his bullpen on this drizzly Friday afternoon.
Â
Just about all of that production came from the top of the order as all of the base hits that scored runs came off the bat of a batter hitting in the 1-2-3-4-5 spots. Gallarda, who we will talk more about later, started the scoring for BU with a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Â
Before the Eagles' first baseman connected for that big fly San Diego Christian had built itself a nice 3-0 lead. Two of those three runs were unearned as Biola had its fair share of issues on defense with five errors in the first game.
Â
Eric Diomartich pitched well enough to get the win for Biola, and it seemed like his offense was going to help him with it as two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh had them in control at 9-1 before
Buddy Brouwer came on in relief in the eighth inning.
Â
Brouwer fashioned himself a scoreless inning, despite allowing a leadoff double, and dropped his season ERA down to 0.57. Head Coach
Jay Sullenger decided to cut him off after one inning and handed the ball to Gabe Ihrif for the ninth.
Â
Unfortunately, that did not go according to plan as Ihrig allowed two hits and walked one to load the bases with no outs. He got a popout to loosen the tension just a bit, but then Justin DiStefano took a 3-2 pitch just over the wall in right field for a game-tying grand slam.
Â
Ihrig went back out in the 10
th and allowed runners on the corners with no outs before Sullenger called upon
Daniel Jang. Jang was cool as the other side of the pillow as he induced a popup and then two infield ground balls to work out of the inning unscathed.
Â
He worked in and out of jams for the next three innings too as he held the Hawks without a run through the end of the top of the 13
th in a four inning, 61 pitch relief appearance.
Â
His stamina paid off when he was rewarded with a win as
JD Meyer drove a 3-2 pitch to left-center to score
Daniel Rasmussen (who was pinch running for
Sam Thorne) from first to win the game with nobody out in the 13
th.
Â
The second game was all about the absolute domination of the Hawks batters that a
Jimmy Gallarda who was in full command of the strike zone had. The junior tossed seven shutout innings and faced just seven batters over the minimum in a terrific starting pitching performance.
Â
The great pitching from him did not come as much of a surprise, because Gallarda now has himself a streak of 20.2 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run. Today, he struck out four, retired seven via fly outs and nine via groundouts in an all-around solid performance on the bump.
Â
His counterpart, Gio Ochoa, is a solid pitcher in his own right. He began the game with 2.2 hitless innings of work, which gave him at least 11.2 consecutive hitless innings of work at Eagles Diamond since he pitched a no-hitter here in his outing last year.
Â
He would not replicate that performance again in this one as some clutch hitting from
Jeremy Barth,
Rawley Hughes and
Aaron Chavez helped the Eagles earn the win offensively with two runs in the fifth.
Â
Barth scored the first run of the game on a one-out RBI single from Hughes, and then the second out of the inning was a Chavez sacrifice fly that brought
Jerron Largusa across the plate to complete the game's scoring.
Â
The Eagles will look to complete the sweep with a 10:00 a.m. 9-inning game on Saturday morning. The game has moved up one hour from its already altered start time in an effort to avoid forecasted rain.
