Warriors Walk-Off With Sweep

Biola keeps the No. 7 team in the country on its toes throughout the series, but ultimately gets sweeped.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball's last series against No. 7 Westmont was a bit of a one-sided affair as the Warriors combined to outscore the Eagles 23-5 over the course of three games.

That series was just about two months ago, and the proof that this Biola team has come a long way since then can be found in the results of this second three-game set between the Eagles and Westmont.

Unfortunately, Biola lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 1-0 and 6-5, and ended up with another three-game sweep at the hands of the Warriors. However, to go on the road to Santa Barbara and keep the series to just a 15-9 run differential in three very competitive games against a Warriors team that is absolutely loaded is a big sign of progress.

"I feel very good about this baseball team. They played the seventh ranked team in the country with good chances to win all three games," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "This team has gotten better each week and this week was no different. We do not need a W or an L to tell us who we are."

Game one on Saturday was a classic pitcher's duel as Jimmy Gallarda and David Gaydos duked it out throughout the ultra-competitive game and held the two teams to a combined eight hits.

Two of Westmont's hits, and the only run of the game, came in the bottom of the first as the coupled back-to-back hits with one out to open up the scoring as Michael Frigon crossed the plate.

Gallarda would go on to pitch six more shutout innings as he held a Westmont lineup that averages over seven runs-per-game to just that single score. He was relieved by Daniel Jang who ended the game with one perfect inning in the eighth.

The only problem in the opener was that Gallarda's offense could not scratch together any run support against David Gaydos and the Warriors' bullpen.

Gaydos held Biola to just three hits in his seven innings of work and he was masterful at inducing ground outs right when he needed them. Nearly half of his outs came by way of the groundball as he worked towards his ninth win of the 2016 season.

Biola's best chance for offense in the first game came in the first and third innings. Biola got one-out doubles in each inning, but could not bring either Sam Thorne or Rawley Hughes around to score.

Game two saw a bit more life from both offenses and came to a bitter conclusion as a game that Biola led from the first through top of the seventh innings came to an end as a come-from-behind walk-off win for the home team in the bottom of the seventh.

Looking to erase the stench of the game one shutout the Eagles got on the board in a big way in the top of the third inning as they brought four runs home against the Warriors' starter, Zach DeMarcus.

With one out in the inning four consecutive Biola batters had productive at-bats as the Eagles scored their four runs off of a Thorne single, JD Meyer Walk, Alec de Watteville 2-RBI double and Jeremy Barth two-run homerun.

The third inning was kind to this Biola lineup during this series as the team had two separate four-run third innings in the first and third games.

Westmont answered back just a bit in the bottom of the third as they scored twice against Micah Beyer. Beyer went just 3.2 innings in this one as Sullenger limited his outing despite his having some relatively good stuff.

The lead held at 4-2 until Barth picked up his third RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to make it 5-2. This was the second time in the series that Biola had itself feeling confident with a lead relatively late in the game.

Unfortunately that confidence would run out in the final inning of play as Westmont scored four time on five hits in order to steal the 6-5 win and ensure at least a share of the regular season Golden State Athletic Conference title.

Biola managed 10 hits against a trio of Warriors pitchers, but the offense went cold as the game worked into its later stages as BU could only get three hits against Lance Simpson and Michael Rishwain in the final 4.1 innings.

Biola falls to 27-23 (14-13 GSAC) while Westmont continues its wonder season with a record of 39-7 (23-4 GSAC). The Eagles conclude regular season play with a weekend series at No. 9 Vanguard (35-12-1, 20-7 GSAC) next week. Biola is currently fifth in the conference standings. The top five teams advance to the GSAC Tournament.
