Box Score COMPTON, Calif. --- The last time
Sean McCarrell had an outing of more than an inning was back in February. Despite this and the fact that the junior had just one start to his credit in his three-year Biola career Head Coach
Jay Sullenger still felt comfortable enough to tab McCarrell as the starter for Tuesday's midweek matchup with Bethesda.
Â
Boy did he make the right decision. McCarrell was brilliant on a blistering afternoon at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton as he dealt the Bethesda Flames six shutout innings and allowed just three hits to earn the win in what turned out to be a 10-5 ballgame.
Â
McCarrell had the Flames' number from the start in accumulating a stat line that looks like a total role reversal from the last time he faced this Bethesda team. In three innings of relief last time out he allowed six hits and three runs, which is a far cry from his dominance today.
Â
He was able to pitch free and easy against the Flames thanks to an early offensive outburst that left him room to settle in as his offense built a big lead.
Â
A six-run second inning, highlighted by a three-run homerun off the bat of
Rawley Hughes, made all the difference in this ballgame as Biola was quick to chase the Flames' starter and thrust the Flames into a position of nearly lackadaisical play as they faced a momentous deficit early on.
Â
The Eagles made a lot solid contact throughout the first couple of innings, as they were swinging early in at-bats and looking to jump on Bethesda's pitchers early and often. BU struck for seven hits its six-run third inning, including a stretch five in a row beginning with Hughes' homerun.
Â
The middle of the game moved quickly as Bethesda's relievers began to figure out how to work well against the Eagles' bats (for a short period of time) and McCarrell continued to make Bethesda's hitters uncomfortable in the box.
Â
After the six-run second inning no one would score until Biola struck again in the top of the sixth and top of the seventh. The Eagles extended their lead to 10-0 with a single run off an RBI double from Hughes in the sixth and three runs, all including
Jimmy Gallarda, in the seventh.
Â
Gallarda hit a bases clearing triple with one out in the seventh and then waltzed home as Biola's 10
th run on a wild pitch that the Bethesda catcher just walked casually to retrieve.
Â
It was a shaky day for the Biola bullpen as the Flames managed five runs on four hits over the course of the three innings after McCarrell left the game. The damage was done on a two-run homerun in the seventh and a fluky three-run triple that rolled into a bullpen that was not clearly stated as in or out of play by the umpiring crew.
Â
Even with the late struggles a 10-5 win in a game started, and dominated, by a spot starter and led offensively by red hot catcher (Hughes went 2-for-4 with four RBI), is definitely not a result Sullenger will be disappointed with.
Â
Gallarda (2-for-4/2 RBI) and
Jerron Largusa (3-for-4/2 runs) also had great days at the dish. Largusa also made one of the best fielding plays of the season with a diving catch to record the second out in the bottom of the ninth.
The Eagles improve to 24-19 on the season, and 19-5 since the beginning of March, with this latest win. Bethesda, who has been having a solid season, falls to 23-19. Biola is back at Eagles Diamond on Friday and Saturday hosting Menlo in its last home series of the season.
