Box Score ARCADIA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball got a little taste of Friday Night Lights on Friday as the team traveled to Arcadia Park to play Providence Christian in a night game to open a three-game away-then-home series.
Â
The Eagles came away with an 8-6 victory in a game that ended up coming down to the very last at bat of the ballgame.
Â
It was not an outing that was always as close as it ended up being. The main reason for that was another phenomenal start from senior
Eric Diomartich. Dio went seven strong innings and allowed just two runs to the Sea Beggars while striking out five batters.
Â
"Dio threw great and was in control the entire time. He just continues to get better," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger.
Â
The Eagles' offense was also on fire on Friday night as it jumped on Providence Christian's starter for seven runs in order to build a big lead. Those seven runs came on nine hits and five walks through the first seven innings as Biola again showed tremendous plate discipline.
Â
Biola got out to a strong start with three runs in the top of the first, which was critical in sending Diomartich out to the bump surging with confidence. Those three runs were powered by small ball as the Eagles stole bases and advanced runners with productive outs to setup a 2-run, 2-out double by
Jimmy Gallarda.
Â
The Eagles displayed tremendous patience and an ability to take advantage of opportunities throughout the night as they were able to put one run on the board in each inning from the third through the sixth as the lead grew to 7-1 behind Dio.
Â
One of those runs came by way of the long ball as
Sam Thorne crushed his second homerun of the season with a solo shot in the third inning. The rest of the runs were setup by walks, stolen bases and a bunch of extra-base hits. The Eagles stole six bases on the night and recorded five doubles.
Â
Things began to unravel a bit in the ninth inning as Biola saw its 8-1 lead get chopped all the way down to 8-6 as the bullpen began to get touched up just a bit.
Buddy Brouwer would eventually be the one to close it out. He came in with an 8-4 lead, one out and the bases loaded and found a way to get out of the ballgame with the tying run stranded at second base.
Â
Biola improves to 19-18 overall with the big win and drops the Sea Beggars to 6-30. The two teams meet for a doubleheader at Eagles Diamond on Saturday at noon.
