Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A doubleheader-opening 10-6 victory for Biola Baseball earned Head Coach
Jay Sullenger's squad a three-game winning streak for the second time this season. Unfortunately, a last-inning rally got William Jessup a game two victory (3-2) as the Eagles could not complete the sweep.
Â
"I think we played better today," said Sullenger. "I think we've consistently been playing better as the season goes along. Losing the last one puts a tough feel on it, but as a whole I am happy to see us continuing to make steps."
Â
The Eagles took a lot of steps around the base paths in the opener as the team scored at least once in every inning except for the seventh. The team powered out to a 10-3 lead and ultimately locked down the game at 10-6 after a late spark by William Jessup.
Â
Biola scored two in the first, one in the second and third and two in the fourth, fifth and sixth to extend a huge lead in support of
Micah Beyer and his first reliever
Buddy Brouwer.
Â
Beyer went five strong innings before having to leave the game before the top of the sixth. Brouwer entered and posted two scoreless innings to get the team to the eighth with a seven-run lead.
Â
That offense came courtesy a whole lot of extra-base hits.
Alec de Watteville,
Jeremy Barth and
Jimmy Gallarda each recorded a double,
Sam Thorne hit a triple and
Eugene Shin posted the biggest hit of the day with a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Â
Thorne did a bit of everything for the Eagles in the opener as he caught 7.1 innings behind the plate, went 3-for-4 with a run batted in and even came in to make his first pitching appearance of the season.
Â
Thorne finished the final inning and two thirds after Jessup scored three runs before the Eagles could retire a batter in the eighth. It was a fantastic outing as he faced the minimum, touched 85 with his fastball and struck a guy out with his curve. The no-hit work would earn Sam his first save of the season.
Â
"We've been looking for a guy that could throw with a little velocity at the back end, and he can do that, so I think we'll see more of him," said Sullenger.
Â
The win moves
Micah Beyer to 2-3 and William Jessup's starter, Philip Chavez dropped to 0-4 on the year.
Â
Game two saw
Jimmy Gallarda get the start on the mound and function solely as a pitcher as his bat was not in the lineup.
Â
He looked an awful lot like the Gallarda we saw in fall ball that was simply quick and effective at getting guys out. After the Warriors' leadoff batter made him throw 12 pitches to get a strikeout for the first out of the game Gallarda was dominant and pitched to contact as the WJU batters began to swing early in the count.
Â
He was able to get 10 groundouts through his first six innings of work as he got Biola into the eighth with a 2-1 advantage. His only run surrendered to that point came when a WJU runner scored an out made at second in the top of the first inning.
Â
Unfortunately, in the top of the 7th William Jessup was able to get two runners on by way of an error and a hit-by-pitch and both came around to score as WJU took its 3-2 lead. The runs scored on a wild pitch and two-out single.
Â
Biola's bats did not quite have the same firepower as in the first game as the team only managed six hits and single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings. However, Thorne did go 1-for-3 in game two to extend his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 20.
Â
The doubleheader split moves Biola to 8-15 (3-6 GSAC). William Jessup's game two victory is their first since Feb 20 and it helps them improve to 2-17 (2-10 GSAC).
Â
Biola is back at Eagles Diamond for its 12
th and 13
th consecutive home games when it hosts Dallas Christian on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.
