Big Bopping In Game 2 Leads To Split At UAV

The Eagles settled things with the Pioneers by hanging 14 on them in a game two win after dropping game one.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Calif. --- It was a tale of two very, very different contests up at the University of Antelope Valley's "The Hangar" on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles could not keep the Pioneers off the board in suffering a 21-5 game one defeat, but the opposite was true in game two as Biola earned a dominant 14-1 win.

Biola burned through six different arms in the first game as it attempted to stop an Antelope Valley squad that was eager to get back on the field after 10 days off. Today's meetings were the fourth and fifth (and final) of the season series. With the split on Tuesday Biola finished with a 3-2 advantage over UAV this year.

"It was a tale of two games," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Good news is that we played very well in the last game and Jimmy Gallarda was in complete control again. He's improved with every start this season."

In game one the Pioneers' offense was able to touch up each arm Sullenger sent out there except for Gabe Ihrig and Brandon Valente. Ihrig and Valente combined for 2.2 scoreless in an otherwise forgettable performance by the Eagles' pitching staff.

Antelope Valley scored its 21 runs off of 23 hits and set a new season-best for runs scored as it improved to 26-9 with the game one victory.

Biola scored five runs off five hits in the losing effort as no one in the lineup scored or drove in more than a single run during the opener. UAV held the Eagles down using four members of its pitching staff as it attempted to save its arms for later in the week.

Game two is the one that Sullenger and the squad will look back on fondly. Jimmy Gallarda put out his second straight jaw dropping effort on the bump as he held the hot-hitting Pioneers to just two hits and one run over the course of his 5.2 innings of work. Buddy Brouwer was the second half of the pitching tandem that ruled over UAV in game two. He added 1.2 scoreless innings to drop his miniscule ERA even lower. UAV's starter could not even record an out before he was knocked out of the game in the first inning.

Jonas Wellan was the big bat in the offense as he took it to his old team in a big way. The Eagles' first baseman went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored as he torched the UAV pitching staff all day long. Wellan even added a stolen base for good measure.

Alec de Watteville also had a huge game at the plate in Biola's win. He finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. JD Meyer, Andres Rodriguez and Sam Thorne added to the hit parade with multi-hit games of their own as the Eagles ran away with game two from the get go.

"Wellan came alive hitting the ball hard today," said  Sullenger. "De Watteville kept swinging it like he has been. Also, Rodriguez took great at bats all day today and continues to lead us well at the top of the lineup."

Biola posted three or more runs in three separate innings as all five of the Antelope Valley pitchers surrendered at least two runs during their time on the bump. The Eagles scored in every inning except the second and the fourth as it quickly made UAV forget all about its game one dominance.

Eagles were scampering all around the base paths throughout the second game as Biola ended up with six doubles and a homerun among its 16 total hits. Meyer took a ball deep to score himself and Thorne in Biola's 5-run fifth inning. It was the second baseman's fifth big fly of the season.

The split keeps Biola's season record right at .500 at 18-18 overall. The team continues its non-conference stint this week with a split home and road series against Providence Christian College. The series begins with a Friday night game at Arcadia Park at 6:30 p.m.
