Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With a 4-3 opening game victory on Saturday Biola Baseball claimed stake on its first series win over The Master's College since the 2013 season. The Eagles dropped game two of the doubleheader, 4-1, but managed a 2-1 series win over the Mustangs.
Â
"It was exciting to see the guys play well the past two days," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger. "We haven't put together this kind of weekend against these kinds of teams since I've been here."
Â
What a weekend it was for the now-14-17 Biola Eagles. The team rode fantastic pitching, clean fielding and good, timely hitting to a very satisfactory series victory and is now 6-2 over its last eight games and climbing up the Golden State Athletic Conference standings.
Â
Saturday's opener was a bullpen game for
Justin Hixson's pitching staff. In an attempt to save
Micah Beyer for a start in the Eagles' early week series with Hope International, the Eagles used Beyer,
Buddy Brouwer,
Gabe Ihrig and
Daniel Jang in order to lock down the win.
"Our pitchers did great. They've been getting better and better as we go along," said Sullenger. "This weekend was just a test weekend for us. We've obviously been playing better baseball, but you don't really know for sure until you play some guys like this."
Â
All four pitchers worked effectively to limit TMC to just three runs on seven hits. Ihrig would be the one to get the win to improve his unblemished record and Jang ended up getting a six-out save in a nail-biter of sorts.
Â
The Mustangs got on the board first with an RBI groundout in the top of the first inning. That lead was erased a few innings later when
Sam Thorne and
JD Meyer each lined RBI singles into the outfield in a productive third inning for the Eagles.
Â
Behind the always-dependable arm of Brouwer, who pitched the third through part of the sixth, the 2-1 lead held strong until some TMC production in the top of the sixth. When he entered with two outs and no one on in the sixth inning Ihrig walked the first batter he faced and then allowed singles to the next two batters, which resulted in the Mustangs tying the game.
Â
However,
Sam Thorne untied it with a no-doubt-about-it homerun to left field during his at bat in the bottom of the seventh to serve the lead right back to the Eagles.
Â
That lead would hold as Biola ended up moving into a tie with The Master's in the conference standings with the one-run win in the first game.
"It was nice to see the guys get over the hump and really play well throughout," said Sullenger.
Â
That tie in the standings was broken as The Master's used a couple late runs in the second game to pull away from Biola and secure a 4-1 win in the final game of the series.
Â
Jimmy Gallarda pitched the entire seven inning game for the Eagles, which does wonders to save the staff for the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday series. He was effective enough to win, but didn't get the run support he was looking for.
The Eagles' best opportunity came in the sixth inning when they were down just 3-1. They managed to get the bases loaded with just one out as the heart of the order came to the plate.
Eugene Shin struck out and
Alec de Watteville grounded into a play at third to end the threat and that would be all she wrote for BU in that game.
Â
Andres Rodriguez was the one who started that threat with a single to leadoff the sixth inning of game two. He had another stunning day at the dish for Sullenger as he went 5-for-6 with three runs scored out of the nine hole on Saturday.
Â
He also played a remarkable third base, which is just what we've become accustomed to from the senior La Mirada native.
Â
"Andres is an example of a guy who has continued to get better over his time here. He's just a smart baseball player and he played really well," said Sullenger.
The Eagles move to 14-17 (7-8 GSAC) and continue play in the GSAC with the early series against Hope International (12-16-1, 6-9) this week. Tuesday and Thursday games will be played in Fullerton, while the middle game will be played at Eagles Diamond.
