Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Biola Baseball capped off the most successful week of its season with two explosive victories over Arizona Christian out in the desert.
Â
Head Coach
Jay Sullenger's team went 4-1 on the week after sweeping Dallas Christian on Tuesday and taking two of three from the Firestorm. Biola earned 5-2 and 11-1 victories on Saturday behind the big arms of
Micah Beyer and
Jimmy Gallarda.
Â
"
Micah Beyer and
Jimmy Gallarda set the tone, and
Sam Thorne did a great job behind the plate all weekend," said Sullenger. "Big effort by the guys today. Showed their toughness and imposed their will on someone at spots this weekend."
Â
Beyer got the ball in game one and came up big for Sullenger and his teammates in the lower-scoring game of Saturday's doubleheader. The sophomore threw seven innings of four-hit ball and allowed just two runs to the home bats.
Â
The game began as a dual between he and Tatum Hendrix as neither team could score over the first third of the contest. The Eagles broke out in the fourth inning as
Eugene Shin hit a one-out single through the left side to bring
JD Meyer across the plate as the game's first run.
Â
The offense would not stop there though as the Eagles again got to Hendrix in the fifth and sixth innings to open the game up.
Â
Biola put up a three-run fifth inning that would ultimately be the difference in what ended up as a three-run game. All of the Eagles' damage in that fifth inning came with two outs after leadoff man
Aaron Chavez began the rally with a single and a swipe of second base. He, Meyer and
Daniel Rasmussen would each come around to score in the inning as the Eagles opened up a 4-0 lead.
Â
Meyer's run scored on a steal of home plate as he took advantage of Hendrix working out of the windup even with runners on.
Â
"In game one we took advantage of the few runners we had with some aggressive base running," said Sullenger. "We also had some nice offensive performances from Chavez who really got us going from the leadoff spot."
Â
Chavez was 2-for-5 with a run scored in game one and 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI in game two as his season average climbed to .333.
Â
ACU tacked on two in the bottom of the fifth before the Eagles would score one more in the sixth and then go on to close the game out.
Buddy Brouwer came in for a six-out save in the eighth and ninth innings and did not allow a hit.
Â
Game two was led by a fantastic effort on the bump by Gallarda. The junior went five of the game's seven innings and held ACU to one run while his own offense was exploding in the windy conditions in the desert.
Â
Alec de Watteville's 3-for-3 performance, including his fifth homerun of the season, was the biggest spark on the offensive end for BU. He drove in five runs in this game. It becomes the junior shortstop's second 5-RBI game this week.
Â
Only two of the Eagles' 10 hits went for extra bases, but it was again some aggressive base running that kept the offense humming along. Sullenger's squad stole four bases in game two.
Â
The Eagles' offense was effective against everyone that ACU coach Bill Swift trotted to the rubber in game two. The home coach used nine different pitchers in this seven inning contest.
Â
Sullenger leaned on Gallarda for the first two-thirds of the game before using a trio of relievers to close out (easily) the final two innings. Gab Ihrig did great work in the seventh as he struck out the side.
Â
Biola's 4-1 week helped the team improve to 12-16 overall and 5-7 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. ACU falls to 9-13 (6-9 GSAC). The Eagles are back in action this Friday and Saturday as they host No. 10 The Master's College (15-9) for a three-game set. Â
