Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Before
Connor Getting's six-point performance highlighted an unforgettable final three minutes of basketball, No. 10 Biola's 87-60 thumping of No. 24 William Jessup was orchestrated by
Terrell Funches and
Dakari Archer running circles around the Warriors and Biola's defense clamping down like a Tupperware lid on WJU's scorers.
Â
Biola was intent on not allowing a repeat performance of last month's six-point loss up in Rocklin, and it became clear midway through the first half that Tuesday night's Golden State Athletic Conference matchup would most definitely not follow the same script.
Â
After the two teams battled hard to find themselves at 18-18 after the first 12 minutes a switch was flipped in the Eagles' offense that saw four different players combine to score nine consecutive points to build BU a 27-18 lead with six minutes to play in the half.
Â
Caelan Tiongson played a big role in that stretch with four points. He also stole the ball and made a full-court pass to
Jeff Gonzalez for a transition slam dunk that brought the whole gym to its feet earlier in the run.
Â
Biola would extend the lead to 13 by halftime to go into the break with a very comfortable 40-27 edge. The Eagles made 13 of its 25 shots from the floor in the first half on a night when the big, physical William Jessup defense just couldn't do anything to stop the Eagles' athletic backcourt.
Â
The team shot even better in the second half as it utilized a 15-3 run over the first five minutes to build up to the 26-point lead it would maintain through the remainder of the night.
Â
The Eagles ended the second half shooting 64 percent from the floor. It even found a way to make it work from distance three times after making just one three-pointer in the first 20 minutes.
Â
Biola took advantage of the free throw line by making 21 of its 24 awarded opportunities at the charity stripe. This was important in a game that saw 41 total fouls called. Archer was the best in this category, going 7-of-7 on his free throw chances.
Â
He was the Eagles' second leading scorer on this night with 23 points. Only
Terrell Funches was able to pile on more points (24). Funches had a memorable evening by going 10-of-11 from the floor and accounting for three of the Eagles' four three-point makes.
Â
Getting was the other Eagle making memories. The sophomore forward had played just 16 minutes through Biola's first 23 games of the season and had just 11 total points. However, he did some major damage when he came in at the three-minute mark in this one. Biola had a 24-point lead at the time he came into the game, and he helped them extend it to the 27-point final advantage by going 2-for-2 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line to compile a season-best six points and get the crowd on their feet flashing the C-money hand gestures.
Â
Biola improves to 21-3 (8-2 GSAC) with the victory and sits a half game ahead of No. 7 Hope International in the GSAC standings. WJU falls to 15-7 (7-4 GSAC) with the loss.
