Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After beginning the season 3-0, Biola Baseball has been looking for weeks to get another breakout moment. That exclamation point came today as the Eagles scored four runs on one play in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 5-4 walkoff win against College of Idaho.
Â
With the score 1-4 in the Yotes favor, the bottom third of the Eagles order loaded the bases with one out. After closer Bobby Wright induced a fly ball to bring the Yotes within an out of victory,
Jimmy Gallarda stepped to the plate looking to wipe away an 0-for-4 start to the game. On a 2-1 pitch Gallarda hit a looping fly ball that dropped between the outfielders in right center. When centerfielder Dalton Ridgway initially bobbled the ball,
Jerron Largusa scored easily from first before the ball got back to the infield. Then the relay sent to third after Gallarda sailed high, allowing him to trot home and begin the celebration at the plate.
Â
The four-run walkoff play gives
Daniel Jang his first win of the year and acquits
Micah Beyer of what would have been a tough luck loss caused by one bad inning. Beyer notched five swinging strikeouts over seven innings of work and was a formidable challenge for the Yotes the entire game. Beyer ran into trouble in the third inning when the Yotes scored three on a walk, an error and a hit-by-pitch. He settled down the rest of the way, allowing only one additional run and stranding four base runners over his next four innings.
Â
Luckily for Beyer and Biola,
Andres Rodriguez,
Aaron Chavez and Largusa were able to spark the rally that turned the game around in its final moments. The last third of the Eagles order went 4-for-8 with four free passes in the game and scored four of the Eagles five runs in the winning effort. Chavez was the only batter for Biola who reached base safely each of his four plate appearances. He had two walks, a triple and two runs scored.
Â
The performance of Yotes' reliever Kaleb Price should not be lost in all the excitement, as the southpaw was commanding over four innings of one-run ball. Price had 12 first pitch strikes against the 13 batters he faced, never had a three-ball count, and only allowed two base runners.
Â
College of Idaho takes their second loss of the season and has a 12-2 record heading into play Saturday. The Eagles improve to 5-10 and look to carry momentum into another home game Saturday afternoon against the Bethesda Flames at 2:00 p.m. A broadcast will not be available for the game.
