Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Unconventional is certainly the best choice of word to describe Wednesday afternoon's 10-9 loss to the Bethesda Flames. The Eagles got down 0-8 before charging all the way back until pouring rain spoiled the comeback effort in Biola's final at-bat.
Â
Bethesda crossed the plate eight times through the first three innings in roughing up Eagles' starter,
Tiger Chase and forcing him out of the game after two innings of work.
Â
Meanwhile, Bethesda's starter, Braxton Rovello-Diaz, had the Eagles' lineup mesmerized with his wacky submarine delivery as Biola could only get two runners on base through the first three innings while the Flames were riding the merry-go-round during their own ABs.
Â
Finally in the bottom of the fourth, just as the rain began to pick up, Bu was able to begin to find chinks in the Bethesda armor. After
Jimmy Gallarda singled to get Biola's first hit of the ballgame,
Eugene Shin stepped into the box and muscled one just over the left field fence to make it an 8-2 ballgame.
Shin had a great day as he went 3-for-4 with the big fly. He accounted for one-third of Biola's hits on the afternoon.
Â
Sean McCarrell allowed a leadoff double to Armando Valencia in the top of the fifth, which ended up hurting him when a Daniel Arellano single brought Valencia around to score and make it 9-2.
Â
The confidence the Flames were bursting at the seams with began to fade in the bottom of the fifth as all of the Eagles began to make good contact against Rovello-Diaz the second time through the order.Â
Â
Singles from
Joey Magro and
Sam Thorne had two runners on and one out for red-hot
JD Meyer. Meyer put a charge into one and pulled a ball over the fence in right field for his second homerun of the season.
Â
The Eagles' bats remained hot for the rest of the contest as two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth made it 10-9 headed into the final inning of play and had the crowd electric with anticipation.
Â
A leadoff single from Lomeli to begin the top of the ninth put
Daniel Jang back on his heels immediately in a high-pressure situation where everyone was looking to him to hold BUC at 10. After the runner moved into scoring position Jang induced a lineout and a fly out to foul territory as Gallarda looked up into the rain to pull down the final out of the inning and bring
JD Meyer to the plate with a chance to tie the game with one swing of the bat.
Â
The rain went from drizzling to all-out downpour just as Meyer stepped into the batter's box and the effects on the Eagles' hitters were clear. Usually reliable, Meyer and
Alec de Watteville both struck out and then Gallarda ground out on a nubber to the shortstop to end the game.
Â
Biola falls to 4-9 following this loss. Bethesda improves to 8-7. BU defeated Bethesda 10-9 in the season-opener before BUC got this 10-9 victory to even the season series.
Not to be missed in the loss was a great relief effort by
Sean Rothfuss. The tall, lanky senior had the Flames' number over 2.2 innings of solid two-hit ball.
Â
If the field can dry and the rain can stay away Biola will host College of Idaho on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. That is not likely, so check back here for schedule updates.
