Dominant Defensive First Half Leads To Win

Biola holds No. 16 Westmont to just 14 first-half points in a tremendous demonstration of defense.

Caelan Tiongson carried Biola in the second half after Jeff Gonzalez dominated the first.
Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- In its last game Biola Men's Basketball suffered more than a few defensive lapses in a game that was much closer against The Master's College than anyone would have thought.

That was far from the case on Saturday night as the nations No. 1 defense fortified itself for its date with No. 16 Westmont and was more than ready to take on one of the nation's top offenses, putting up historic numbers in the first half of a 69-50 win over the Warriors.

After beginning the game with an 18-0 lead and holding the Warriors without a single made basket until 10 minutes and four seconds into the game the Biola defense would go on to hold Westmont to just 14 total points in the first half.

The Eagles' defense completely broke down the normally potent Westmont offense and forced the Warriors to miss on their first 11 attempts from the floor. Meanwhile Jeff Gonzalez, Dakari Archer and Terrell Funches were using their athleticism on the other end to build a huge lead.

Gonzalez went 6-of-8 from the floor to pile on 14 first half points as he led Biola to a 35-14 advantage at the break. His six made field goals equaled the total made field goals for the entire WC roster in the first half.

Biola held the Warriors to just 1-of-11 from three-point range in that first half, which is saying something special about this defense since Westmont is the second-best team in the country in terms of three-point percentage.

What must have been a great halftime talk from the Warriors' experienced head coach, John Moore, lit a spark under Westmont as they came out for the second period of play.

The team was a 100 percent different side that came out shooting with confidence and limiting turnovers. The Warriors scored 18 of the first 27 points of the second half in order to cut the huge Biola lead down to a 12-point margin that was definitely manageable with 12:47 to play.

This run had Eagles fans sweating as they could recall when Biola overcame an 18-point deficit in just eight minutes one week ago. However, a perfectly called timeout and pep talk from Dr. Dave Holmquist got Biola back on its game and helped the Eagles start an 11-point run that would open up the game's largest lead at 59-37.

Caelan Tiongon played a huge role in the Eagles' late second half offensive work. He scored six of the 11 points on that run as part of his 15-point total for the night. His 13 second-half points were a big reason the Eagles were able to keep the lead at double-digits throughout.

So, although Westmont more than doubled its point production from the first half, and even outscored Biola in the second half, the Eagles walk away with another blowout victory over their tightest Golden State Athletic Conference rivals.

This is the fourth time this season that the Eagles held an opponent to 50 points or fewer. The final score of 69-50 is eerily similar to Biola's 72-51 win over Westmont earlier this season. The season sweep of the Warriors is a first for BU since the 2008-09 season.

Gonzalez, Tiongson and Terrell Funches all scored in double-digits for the Eagles. Dakari Archer didn't have a great shooting night, but he still was very active in the win with seven points, seven rebounds an assist and two steals.

Biola improves to 24-3 (11-2 GSAC) with the victory. It's the third-straight loss for the Warriors as they plummet to 17-8 (6-6 GSAC). Biola holds onto a half-game lead over No. 7 Hope International for first place in the conference.
