HIGHLIGHTS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- When
Terrell Funches opened up the game with back-to-back-to-back made three-point shots to give Biola an nearly immediate nine-point burst no one in the gym would've ever guessed the Eagles' 23
rd win of the season would be decided by as few as 13 points.
That's when ended up happening on Tuesday night inside of Chase Gymnasium as Biola took an 83-70 victory over The Master's College to improve to 23-3 on the 2015-16 season.
Â
The Eagles led from wire-to-wire in this one and actually experienced leads of up to 25 points throughout the night, but a whole bunch of scoring from Reid Shackelford (31 points) and some late defensive breakdowns allowed the finish to be a little too close for comfort against a team that came into the night with 11 straight losses.
Â
Even though the defense was not perfect, the Biola offense was firing on all cylinders throughout a night loaded with remarkable moments of athleticism, flair and tremendous skill.
Â
Biola had the most dunks it's had in any home game this season and added 13 fast break points in a night that was very fun to watch in the Eagles' offensive end.
Â
Leading that show was
Caelan Tiongson. The senior was third on the team with his 14 points, but he shot 7-of-8, had two dunks and even had a trio of assists as he paved the way for Biola's third 80-plus point performance in its last four games.
Â
Funches was the team's leading scorer, being aided heavily by his three-straight three-pointers in the first two minutes of play. He ended the evening with 19 points, three assists and an unusually low total of just one rebound.
Â
His partner in the backcourt,
Dakari Archer, made his presence felt on defense and, as is customary, on offense in transition. He came away with five steals and three assists as his hustle stats were on point in the Eagles' win. His five takeaways should help him move into second in the Golden State Athletic Conference in that category.
Â
Jeff Gonzalez also reached double-digit scoring with 10 points. He can two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight.
Â
The Master's College nearly doubled its shooting percentage from half one to half two, which is what helped the Mustangs keep the game relatively close. TMC was only outscored by one point in the second half due to the increased efficiency against Biola's defense. This is just the second time this season Biola's allowed 70 points to an opponent.
Â
A perfect 15-of-15 free throw performance went a long way in keeping the Mustangs hanging around in this one. The referees were not afraid to blow their whistles on a night where a combined 35 fouls were called.
Â
Biola held a 16-11 turnover advantage, which led to 14 points off of turnovers to give the Eagles the edge they'd end up riding right to victory.
Â
Biola moves to 23-3 (10-2 GSAC), while The Master's College drops to 4-16 (1-11 GSAC). The Eagles head out on the road for Saturday night's matchup with Westmont (17-7, 6-5 GSAC). Biola beat Westmont at home in early-January (72-51).
