Eagles Allow Only 38 In First Game As No. 1

Biola beats West Coast Baptist 96-38 in a runaway game at home.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Playing with the No. 1 in front of its name for the first time since 2002 Biola Men's Basketball was looking to make a big impression on Thursday night.

Holding its opponent without a point for the first 10:51 of the game and cruising to 96-38 victory was a sure way to make that statement in its non-conference game against West Coast Baptist.

The Eagles held the visiting team to just eight points in the first half, which is the second lowest half of a Biola opponent in the Eagles' 56-year history. The lowest 20 minutes for an opponent was when Biola allowed just six points in a half to the Redlands Bulldogs during the 1979-80 season.

Biola shot lights out throughout the evening, ending with an overall shooting percentage of 55 percent. Most of the scoring came from inside of the three-point arc, and 62 of the team's 96 points came inside of the paint.

The Eagles' reserves saw a lot of time on the floor this evening, with Biola's bench accounting for 59 points. Luis Medearis saw his most minutes of the season and took full advantage of it to lead the team with 21 points. He shot 8-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-4 from the free throw line and pulled in 10 rebounds to post his first double-double of the year.

The Eagles had three other scorers, all big men, reach double-digits as Steve Herve had 17, Jeff Gonzalez had 12 and Alex Talma had 10.

Levi Auble was the team's leading rebounder with 11, all on defense. The Eagles led the rebounding battle 56-31.

The stifling defense from Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's team held West Coast Baptist to just 22 percent shooting and only 16 percent from three-point line. The struggles from deep did not stop the visiting Eagles from throwing up shots from distance, as they took 31 in the game.

The 38 points allowed is the lowest for Biola since it defeated Whittier 78-35 on Nov. 23, 2010.

Biola improves to 11-0 with its latest victory and begins Golden State Athletic Conference play this Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. home game against William Jessup (8-3).
