Eagles Cap Undefeated Non-Conference Schedule

Biola beats Fraser Valley by 32 points to secure a 14-0 regular season non-conference slate.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A hot shooting start and some scintillating defense helped the No. 1 Biola Eagles storm out to a big lead it would never relinquish as it won its final regular season non-conference game on Saturday afternoon, 88-56, over the visiting University of Fraser Valley.

Biola began the game by outscoring the Cascades 14-0 and then 18-3 through the first seven-plus minutes of action. The visiting team missed its first nine shots of the game as the Eagles' defense forced awkward shot after awkward shot straight after the opening tip.

On the flip side, it seemed as if Biola was making everything it took. The Eagles missed only two shots from the field during its opening 14-point swing. The two misses were actually the team's first two points of the game, so it made six in a row to build the big lead, including burying two open three-point shots.

The Biola ball movement was exquisite for much of the night, resulting in open looks and really good shot selection. The Eagles would shoot 55 percent from the floor and make nine of their 18 attempts from distance. Free throw shooting was good but not great as the team went 11-of-16 from the stripe en route to its 32-point victory.

Biola's bench had noticeable impact as it scored 42 of the team's 88 points, led by double-digit efforts from Blake Shannon, Jr. and Alex Talma and a quick and impressive nine points at the end of the game.

Tonight's win capped off a perfect preseason for the No. 1 Eagles. They finish 14-0 in non-conference play, which makes this the first undefeated preseason for Dr. Dave Holmquist's team since the 2004-05 season. That team finished 28-8 and made it to the national semifinals. This team, currently 14-1, is hoping to make it even farther than that.

Dakari Archer led all scorers with a quiet and efficient 13 points. He also had three assists, three boards, two steals and committed no turnovers.

Caelan Tiongson and Trevor Treinen, two players with a very special bond, were the two other Eagles who reached double-digits. Tiongson was a beast inside, going 6-for-9 (12 points) with eight boards and Treinen did not miss a shot all night as he finished with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting with three threes.

Biola never trailed in the game and the closest the game got (after BU jumped out to its 14-point lead) was a 10-point game with just over four minutes left in the first half. That lead expanded to 21 by the break as BU held the Cascades to just six points in the final six minutes of that half.

The Eagles improved to 14-1 with the win and will now set their eyes on securing their first Golden State Athletic Conference victory of the season. Biola hosts The Master's (11-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday January 3.
