Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- No. 4 Biola Men's Basketball had no trouble improving its record to 10-0 on Saturday as it won its second game in as many days at this year's Hope International Classic.
The Eagles defeated Shepherd University, 76-45, to keep its record perfect as it completed its second-to-last preseason game before conference play begins at home next week.
Biola was heavily favored to win the match over the relatively new local NCCAA program. The Eagles did everything they needed to do to get the victory, and were especially impressive in how they limited mistakes early in the contest.
The Eagles held a 42-18 lead at halftime and were shooting 50 percent with zero turnovers through the first 20 minutes. Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist's side was also playing some very disciplined basketball on both ends, committing just three fouls in the full first half.
Alex Talma and
Dakari Archer provided most of the scoring for the Eagles in the first half as they combined for just over half of the team's scoring (22 points) and missed just five shots from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Talma was just as good in the second half as he would finish the game with a new season-high 21 points. The big man shot 7-of-9 from the field and made seven of his eight free throw attempts to power the high-scoring outing.
The increased production could be a direct result of all the extra time he's been spending working on his game outside of practice over the past few weeks, logging hours of work on his personal time.
He ended one rebound shy of what would've been his second double-double of the year as he finished with nine boards. Seven of his nine rebounds came on the offensive end as he helped the Eagles get 20 total offensive rebounds resulting in 19 second chance points.
Biola dominated every facet of the game and got everyone in off the bench in a game that it led from 5-4 all the way to the final buzzer. The Eagles' bench attributed 23 points to the effort.
Steve Herve (10 points, 5 rebounds) and
Levi Auble (6 points, 7 rebounds) were the two biggest standouts off the bench for Holmquist, but he also got production from the likes of
Connor Getting (5 points in four minutes) and
Luis Medearis (two points).
The Eagles are now 10-0 and ready for their final preseason non-conference tune-up on Thursday when they host West Coast Baptist at 7:30 p.m.
