Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- History was made inside of Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night as the No. 4 Biola Men's Basketball team topped 100 for the first time since Nov. 25, 2006 (yes, over a decade).
Â
The Eagles came away with a dominant 106-57 victory over the visiting University of La Verne Leopards to improve to 2-0 on the new season. It was an exhibition game for La Verne and did not count toward their season record.
Â
This game was a much different story than that 138-105 victory over the University of Redlands, which coincidentally is from the same conference as La Verne. In that game Redlands played a run and gun style offense that forced both teams to run up the score. In tonight's contest the Eagles had little trouble running up the score just by sheer force of will, solid shooting and much better ball control than the visitors.
Â
Biola had its second and third 50-point halves of the season in tonight's contest as it scored 56 in the first half and 50 in the second 20 minutes. The Eagles led the game from wire-to-wire after
Trevor Treinen opened the scoring with a made three-pointer one minute and six seconds in.
Â
One of the biggest weapons in the Eagles' arsenal on this night was takeaways. The team scored 22 points off of turnovers by taking the ball away from the Leopards 18 times.
Â
The only point in the game where Biola found itself a little bit less effective than La Verne was on fastbreaks. BU scored just six points in transition while the Leopards torched Biola for 14 such points.
Dr. Dave Holmquist pointed out that weakness in his team's transition defense as a point of emphasis in preparation for the next time out.
Â
Aside from getting beat on those few plays this night was all smiles for the starting five and the bench players as Holmquist was able to spread the minutes around exceptionally and get deep into the bench.
Â
Some of those non-starters to make a noticeable impact were
Alex Talma (15 pts, 5 rbs),
Luis Medearis (10 pts – big second half) and
Blake Shannon, Jr. (9 pts, 2 steals).
Â
"It was another good effort tonight. We have a tough game tomorrow, so it was nice for us to get everyone to play and keep everyone from getting too many minutes," said Holmquist.
Â
For the second time in as many games
Caelan Tiongson was the team's leading scorer. He went 7-for-10 from the floor and sunk three of four free throws in just 20 minutes on the floor to end with 17 total points.
Â
He was one of six Eagles to reach double-digit scoring with
Ryan Swain (16), Talma (15),
Dakari Archer (14),
Jeff Gonzalez (11) and Medearis (10).
Â
Gonzalez ended one rebound shy of a double-double as he added nine rebounds to go along with his scoring. He also did well to facilitate the ball as he tied with Treinen for the team-lead with five assists.
Â
Biola lit up the score sheet shooting 50 percent, making 28 of 35 free throws (80 percent) and outrebounding the Leopards 52-30.
Â
"I think we came out, played hard and did a really good job," said Holmquist.
Â
Biola improved to 2-0 and is back at Chase Gym on Wednesday night as the second part of a basketball doubleheader against Bethesda.
