Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After leaving it all the pitch in an epic 90 minutes of soccer on Saturday night, Biola Women's Soccer suffered its first loss of 2016 as it fell to Vanguard 1-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament finals.
The only goal of the match came in the 72nd minute when Lions midfielder Alex Bachman found the ball at her feet and broke to the left corner of the 18-yard box. Bachman found her way through the back line and sent a looping ball into the right side netting over leaping goalkeeper
Christina Rodriguez.
Bachman simply took advantage of doing something unexpected, as her position three yards to the left of the box usually prevents attackers from taking shots with their weaker left foot. Instead, the savvy decision to shoot brought elation to the Vanguard bench and their fans, and ultimately was enough to lead them to a conference title.
The goal also forced the Eagles to spend the remaining 18 minutes looking for an equalizer. Biola gave its all in the uphill fight to tie the score and had a majority of the scoring chances for much of te second half of the match. The team had 10 second-half shots and earned four corner kick chances going down the stretch, but Vanguard's All-GSAC keeper was able to keep all Biola efforts out of the back of the net.
Biola managed six shots within the final 10 minutes of the match as they forced the Vanguard defense to go into overdrive in order to maintain their one-goal advantage through the remainder of regulation. Biola was able to outpace the Lions' defenders on the flanks and that did them well to serve balls into the box and put a lot of pressure on Magana and Vanguard late in the game.
The Eagles' best shot to tie the game up came in the 83rd minute as
Ashley Ramirez had a go from the top of the box that whizzed just inches over the crossbar after being deflected by a Vanguard defender. On the ensuing corner kick chance
Bri Mikalson was able to boot a long shot towards goal with hopes of replicating her goal earlier in the regular season that led Biola to a 1-0 win over the Lions. Unfortunately, this time it was not in the cards as Magana snagged it to come up with her fifth save of the night.
Inside of the final minutes Biola forced two runs into its offensive third, but as the game ticked inside of 10 seconds to go Vanguard was able to clear the ball to midfield and secure a conference tournament title.
Despite the disappointment, the Eagles still have the NAIA National Tournament selection show to look forward to on Monday. Biola anticipates an at-large bid into the field of 32 when the seeds are announced at 9:00 a.m. Fans can view the selection show live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/naia/portal.htm?eventId=326188&streamType=video. Vanguard, Biola and Westmont are all expected to make the field from the Golden State Athletic Conference, so Biola could have one more chance to settle this score with the Vanguard Lions now that the season series is tied and one and each team has a goal a piece.
