Eagles Soar to Undefeated Regular Season With 1-0 Win

A single goal stands for Biola on a cold afternoon with sparse offense.

Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. --- No. 5 Biola Women's Soccer is not satisfied with regular season accolades, but an undefeated regular season is simply too impressive to ignore. On a day when the number of undefeated teams in the NAIA dropped from four to two, Paula-Marie Labate scored for the third time in four matches and the Eagles posted another 1-0 shutout win on a frigid afternoon up at William Jessup..

"It was great to come up here and get a victory since we've had trouble winning in Rocklin the past few years," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "The ladies had a little bit of trouble with the slick surface, but they also executed set pieces really well and played with a good fire."

For the second straight match the weather had a significant impact on the offense as both teams combined for a total of 16 shots and only six on goal. Moreover, Biola's first shot attempt did not come until the 31-minute mark, which is uncharacteristic for a team that averaged 20 shots-per-match entering play on Saturday.

Biola remained resolute despite the atypical pace of play. The Eagles brought strong pressure to the Warriors' defensive third all match and repeatedly threatened with set pieces until the William Jessup defense finally gave way to a breakaway from Labate late in the first half.

With 10 minutes left before halftime, Labate found the ball at her feet just a few paces outside the 18-yard area and raced past a challenging defender to the left side of the box. Making use of a hesitation, the Salem, Oregon native switched the ball to her dominant right side and rifled the ball to the far post and past the keeper for the only goal of the match.

Once play progressed to the second half the Eagles found themselves in a familiar script as Christina Rodriguez and the defense neutralized the five corner kicks and three shots the Warriors sent their way to end the match without incident. Saturday's shutout also marked the sixth shutout in Golden State Athletic Conference play for Rodriguez, tying her for the most in the conference with Vanguard's Haley Magana.

Unfortunately, the celebration of the Eagles' undefeated schedule was slightly diminished by a tinge of frustration. The Eagles lost the regular season conference title to Vanguard on Saturday even though Biola had won the matchup between the two teams earlier this month. With a 2-1 win against The Master's earlier on Saturday, Vanguard finished with one more win in conference  and became the outright regular season champions with 27 points to the Eagles' 26.

"The ladies wanted the GSAC title, so they were a little bummed," said Brunelle. "But our senior class still reminds the team that we want so much more out of this season than a regular season conference title. So now we're just motivated to get back to training and preparation for the GSAC tournament."

A second place finish in the GSAC means that the Eagles will have a bye straight into the tournament semifinals on Thursday Nov. 10. Their opponent is yet to be determined. Biola is the host site once again for these tournament semifinals and finals.
