4-0 Feels So Good

Biola beats The Master's College by 10 to improve to 4-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Steve Herve had another exceptional performance with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- In another classic defensive performance for Dr. Dave Holmquist's Biola team the Eagles earned a 10-point win on the road over The Master's College on Saturday evening.

For the third time this season this Biola team held its opponent to under 50 points on the night. All three occurrences have come in the past five outings, including tonight's 56-46 victory.

Both teams struggled to get the ball through the basket throughout the first 20 minutes of play. The Eagles held a 22-20 lead heading into the halftime break powered by a strong final minute that saw Dakari Archer take a ball coast-to-coast for two points in transition and then score a clutch step-back three.

The Mustangs extended a quick six-point lead as it took Biola a few minutes to get its first shot through the hoop. However, a hot streak that saw BU bucket 11 of the next 14 points helped the Eagles take the lead at 11-9 with a midrange jumper from Caelan Tiongson 10 minutes in.

From there both teams traded fouls and missed shots for much of the rest of the first half until Archer's three sent Biola into the locker room with the minor advantage.

Both teams were eager to move on from a first half that saw them shoot a combined 14-of-52 from the floor and turn the ball over 12 times. Biola's ball movement is what helped it build the small lead. The Eagles had five assists, compared to two from TMC, and it scored four points in the fastbreak while TMC was without a single transition basket.

The Eagles scored the first five points of the second half to open up a seven-point advantage and place itself firmly in the driver's seat in this one. It was a total team effort to open up the lead as a made free throw from Jeff Gonzalez, a vicious dunk from Terrell Funches and a layup by Steve Herve accounted for the five points.

A cold streak allowed TMC to tighten back to within one at 32-31, but that was as close as the Mustangs would get as Biola never lost its lead because of an 11-point run over the next six minutes.

That run left the Eagles with a 43-31 advantage with just eight and a half minutes left on the clock. Biola would ride out the final eight minutes and change by sinking free throws and scooping in its own offensive boards.

Herve was a beast on the boards with a team-high 11 as Biola worked to a slim margin in rebounding at 42-40. He was also one of the team's best shooters by going 4-of-9 for eight points.

Trevor Treinen also went 4-of-9 from the floor as he once again put in great minutes off the bench for Coach Holmquist. The freshman ended with 12 points, one of three Eagles in double-figures, and he also was clutch late in going 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

Biola was 17-of-23 as a team from the charity stripe, which helped them take advantage of the 20 fouls committed by The Master's College.

Archer (15 points) and Funches (12 points) were the other two Eagles to score 10+. Gonzalez ended with just three points, but his seven rebounds and three blocks cannot be overlooked as he again asserted his dominance on D.

The win pushes Biola to 17-1 (4-0 GSAC) and drops the Mustangs to 4-8 (1-3 GSAC). With the win the Eagles tie their total number of GSAC wins from the 2014-15 season (4-12). Next on the docket is Thursday's road match at William Jessup (10-5, 2-2 GSAC).
