Bey-ing and Well-ing

Micah Beyer and Jonas Wellan stole the show on Friday with a great outing and three-run bomb,

Micah Beyer got the win with seven innings of four-hit ball. He struck out six in a dominant outing.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- If you pitch the ball well, hit the ball well and field the ball well you're going to have a very good chance at winning some ballgames. Biola checked off all three of those boxes in a Friday afternoon 4-1 win over the University of Antelope Valley under the bright sunshine at Eagles Diamond.

The game was highlighted by a great starting pitching performance by sophomore Micah Beyer and a three-run bomb by Jonas Wellan in his first outing against the team he played for just last season.

"It's exciting to be 2-0, but we just need to keep playing good baseball," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger.

The product on the field on Friday afternoon can definitely be classified as "good baseball" as the Eagles piled on 10 hits, only allowed two Pioneers to reach base more than once in the game and fielded the ball very well behind Beyer and reliever Buddy Brouwer.

After allowing the leadoff batter to reach in the top of the first, Beyer quickly settled into his rhythm and struck out two of the three other UAV hitters in the inning to keep the Pioneers off the board in the first.

UAV's Ayrton Costa did not have quite the same first inning experience. The hard throwing right-handed pitcher came into the day with a 1-0 record by way of complete game, 10-strikeout shutout last week. His 0.00 ERA changed in the bottom of the first inning after Wellan went yard to score himself and JD Meyer and Eli Malfo.

"It changes the game when you get a hit like that early to go up by three," said Sullenger. "It allows everybody to relax a little bit. Based on how the rest of that game went it would've been a whole different game if the ball didn't go over the fence."

That lead would be all Beyer would need to work with as the crafty Eagles' ace went on to pitch seven innings without hardly any threats from the UAV offense. The Pioneers picked up their lone run in the top of the fifth when Bryce Gieseke turned a one-out double into a run when Sam Thorne gunned down a runner attempting to steal second as Biola traded a run for an out.

"Micah is in this position because this is what he's been throwing like since he got here," said Sullenger. "He got even better this fall by finding a little more command of his off-speed stuff. He looked great today and did a great job."

Gieseke was the only guy that had the Eagles' number throughout the afternoon. He went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk. The only other time UAV threatened to score against Beyer was in the top of the 6th. Neal White swiped second and third and attempted to take home on a wild pitch, but Thorne connected with Beyer just in time to hang him out to dry.

Jimmy Gallarda scored Biola's fourth run in the bottom of the seventh. He led off the inning with a double, the Eagles' only other extra-base hit, and would come around to score on a Jerron Largusa single.

The Eagles could've done even more damage that inning, but a ground ball double play saw their offense quickly come to an end. It was one of two scoring-stymieing double plays Biola would hit into on the afternoon.

When Beyer's day was done Brouwer picked up right where the starter left off. He went two strong, scoreless innings in relief to pick up his first save of the year. He's had three good innings of work through BU's first two victories.

"Buddy did a great job answering the bell again," said Sullenger. "He threw good pitches and gave us some good, competitive innings."

Thorne, Largusa and Alec de Watteville all recorded multi-hit games on an afternoon where the single was king. Each of them had two singles to combine for six of the Eagles' eight overall.

Biola improves to 2-0 with the win, while the Pioneers fall to 3-1 in the first year under new head coach Jacob Garsez. The two teams will go at it again tomorrow in a series-concluding doubleheader at Eagles Diamond. Gallarda will get the ball in the 11 a.m. game and Sean Rothfuss will get his first start since the 2014 season in the seven-inning game two.
