Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the 28
th time in his 36-year career as the head coach of Biola Men's Basketball
Dr. Dave Holmquist has guided the Eagles to a 20-win season.
Â
The Eagles defeated San Diego Christian 84-75 at home on Tuesday night to improve to 7-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play and 20-3 overall. Biola becomes the first team in the country to reach the 20-win plateau.
Â
It was not a typical win for coach Holmquist's squad, as the team allowed its opponent to reach a season-high 75 points in the winning effort. The Hawks used quick, transition offense and a dangerous attack from three-point range to cause the Eagles to sweat from start-to-finish in this one.
Â
The Eagles trailed just once in the game, but San Diego Christian managed to keep the score within six points or fewer up until there was just four minutes left in the game because of some sloppy ball movement from Biola and a lack of sound its normally stellar defense.
Â
Biola scored 14 of the final 23 points to overcome the struggles that plagued it throughout the night and walk away with what seems to be a pretty convincing win.
Caelan Tiongson and
Terrell Funches each had very strong second halves as they aided the Eagles in extending what was just a two-point halftime lead. Funches scored 15 of his team-leading 19 points over the final 20 minutes as he got hot from three-point range. Tiongson did his normal dirty work inside to earn 13 of his 17 in half number two.
Â
Biola crushed in in the rebounding category as it led SDC 45-27 throughout the game, but the Eagles' 13 turnovers helped to negate some of those added possessions. Also, Biola send SDC to the free throw line five more times.
Â
The Hawks took, and made, twice as many three-point shots than Biola did. They were led by Trevor English and Mark Eden, who combined for 21 points off of the three ball.
Â
Dakari Archer and
Steve Herve joined Tiongson and Funches in double digits with steady offensive performances of their own. Herve was especially good on a night where he went 8-for-9 from the floor and added nine rebounds and a block to his 16 points.
Â
The paint was a source of success for Biola all night long as BU outscored San Diego Christian 56-30 inside.
Â
The win pushes the Eagles to 20-3 (7-2 GSAC), while the Hawks fall to 9-8 (2-5 GSAC). Biola is back in action with next Tuesday's home matchup against William Jessup. The Warriors won the game between these two in Rocklin two weeks ago.
