Men's Soccer

Not Too Hot

Biola Men's Soccer loses for the second Saturday in a row despite again seeming to be the better side.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was another night of almosts, maybes and not quites for Biola Men's Soccer in a frustrating 0-1 loss at the hands of NCAA Division II opponent Dixie State.

The Eagles had the better attack and put more pressure on the Red Storm defense, but the DSU defenders held tough and kept a clean sheet against the relentless Biola attack.

This makes back-to-back Saturday night home losses where Biola can't even count on two hands the number of scoring chances it had, but that fell by the wayside.

The Eagles took 24 attempts from the field, with six of them going on goal, but none of them going in goal. That number, 24, is what the Eagles came into the game averaging in each outing, but the team was also averaging three goals-per-game off all those attempts.

Tonight, the only scoring came off the head of Jason Arollo, who took a corner kick and headed it to the left side corner to sneak it past JT Addington and give the Red Storm all they would need to get the win.

That tally came just six minutes before the halftime break, and whatever Head Coach Todd Elkins said during the 15-minute interlude got the Eagles' attackers fired up. The team came out and took 16 shots in the second half, which doubled their output in the first frame.

One of the best opportunities to find the equalizer came right after Elkins subbed in Marshall Deogracia and Leo Contreras late in the second half.

Biola had a corner kick from John Hanscom find the head of Stephen Tanquary, which got blocked from right in front of the net. Tank had one more chance at goal, but the keeper, Bradley Trella, laid on it to post one of his six saves.

Another good opportunity seemed to come in the 88th minute when Contreras was taken down in the box by a wayward DSU defender. However, no penalty was called and instead Contreras was issued a yellow card for arguing the call.

After that, the wind seemed to be gone from Biola's sails as the final two minutes ticked away without much excitement as the Eagles fell to 4-2 with the shutout loss.  Dixie State improved to 2-1 overall.

Biola Men's Soccer get back on the pitch on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. for a road match at UC Merced (3-1).
