Denn Delivers Three

Malik Shaheed secures his first win as Biola’s Head Coach

LA MIRADA --- The Biola men's soccer team captured their first win of the season under Head Coach Malik Shaheed. With a hat trick from Kyle Denn, the Eagles coasted to victory over the Chaminade Silverswords, 5-1.

Biola was on the attack early, putting two shots on goal within the opening seven minutes. Jeremy Larson forced a save in the fifth minute before Denn put his first attempt on frame two minutes later.

The Eagles broke through in the 14th minute. Rocky Mendoza and Gauthier Caloz combined to set up Denn, who found the back of the net to give Biola an early 1-0 advantage.

Biola continued to generate opportunities throughout the opening half. The Eagles outshot the Silverswords 8-1 over the first 45 minutes, while Ethan Kell turned away Chaminade's lone shot on goal to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Chaminade found the equalizer early in the second half, scoring in the 54th minute to even the match at 1-1.

The Eagles wasted little time responding.

Just under three minutes later, Denn converted a penalty kick to put Biola back in front, 2-1. The goal opened the floodgates for the Eagles, who scored three times in an 11-minute span to take control of the match.

Ethan Michael added to the lead in the 61st minute, scoring an unassisted goal to make it 3-1. Denn then completed his hat trick six minutes later, finding the back of the net for the third time to give Biola a commanding 4-1 advantage.

Biola continued to create chances down the stretch before adding its fifth and final goal in the 86th minute. Gabriel Hernandez set up Ryan Ellsworth, who found the back of the net to cap the Eagles' 5-1 victory.

Denn finished the night with six of Biola's 16 shots, putting four on goal and scoring on three of them. Larson added four shots with three on frame as the Eagles finished with a 16-6 advantage in total attempts and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.

Kell played all 90 minutes between the posts, making one save to secure the victory.

With the win, Biola improved to 1-5-2 overall and 1-0-0 in PacWest play. Chaminade fell to 0-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play.

The Eagles will host the Hawaii Pacific Sharks on Monday, September 28th at 7 p.m.
