HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola batters paid no mind to the first base bag in Tuesday's 8-4 victory over Bethesda, ponding out eight extra-base hits, including three homeruns.

"We've been playing good baseball during the second half of the season," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Today is not much different from the rest. We took care of the baseball on defense, got the job done on the mound and we're swinging the bats better, I feel like, every time we come out here."

Jimmy Gallarda literally is swinging the bat well every time out, as he followed up his first career homerun in the last game with a big fly in his first at bat this afternoon. His homerun was the second of three hit over the left field fence by Biola batters today.

A Julian Jarrard bomb in the bottom of the first opened the scoring, Gallarda's two-run shot made it 3-0 in the second and Eugene Shin hit his first as an Eagle in the sixth inning.

That big bopping came in support of a split-staff pitching outing, led by a strong start from Buddy Brouwer. Brouwer went four innings of one-hit ball to get a win in his first start of the year.

He held the Flames down with five strikeouts, every one of which was needed as he got himself into bases loaded jams because of walks in two of his four innings.

"There were a few walks, but Buddy worked his way out of them and our relief pitchers did a nice job too," said Sullenger.

Bethesda was able to scrape together nine hits off of the three relievers used by Sullenger and used a plethora of pinch runners to manufacture enough offense to pull within one run of the Eagles at two different points in the game.

At one point they had a runner on third with fewer than two outs and a strong chance to tie the game, but Jesse Yancosek worked his way out of it with a groundout and the only strikeout of his two innings.

"We feel like this is a team we should beat if we play good, clean baseball," said Sullenger. "We pulled away late in this one, but before that we could've easily made some mistakes and it could've been a different outcome."

Biola did not make those mistakes, and instead continued to bop against whomever the Flames trotted out to the mound. Bethesda brought it to a 4-5 contest in their half of the seventh, but the Shin blast powered a three-run bottom of the seventh that put this one out of reach.

Daniel Jang had another strong relief performance, working out of a jam in the seventh and hurling a shutout eighth before handing the ball to Jarrard for the ninth. The big junior from San Gabrial allowed two hits in his final inning of work, but he did not surrender a run, thus protecting the 8-4 win that pushed Brouwer to 1-0 on the season.

The Eagles take one of three from the Flames this season and improve to 15-26 overall with the victory. Bethesda falls to 19-22. Biola travels to Arizona Christian for a weekend series on Saturday and Sunday.
