Box Score AZUSA, Calif. --- Russell Harmening again had his way with the Biola batting lineup to begin this go-around with No. 12 Wesmont much in the same fashion that last time's sweep began. The junior right-handed pitcher breezed up and down the Eagles' order in eight innings of work leading to a 9-1 win.
Â
There was a chance to knock the stud pitcher off his routine as this game had to be pushed back four hours and moved to Azusa Pacific University because of an umpire scheduling error, but it turns out nothing can knock him off his game.
Â
Harmening struckout nine Eagles over his eight innings of work, facing four batters over the minimum as he allowed just four hits to BU.
Â
Micah Beyer was called upon to go head-to-head with Harmening and held his own through the first three innings before the Warriors, whose lineup hits for the highest batting average in the league, began to figure him out.
Â
He allowed one run on a solo shot in the first inning and then was steady until back-to-back two-spots opened the game up in the fourth and fifth innings.
Â
While Harmening continued to cruise,
Buddy Brouwer was called out by Head Coach
Jay Sullenger to relieve Beyer after 4.2 innings.
Â
Brouwer settled down the Westmont hitters, keeping them off the board again until and unearned run in the eighth inning widened the lead to 6-0. He had success in painting the strike zone tonight, striking out six, a new season-high, in a new season-high 4.1 innings of relief.
Â
His appearance was valuable to the Eagles who will play their fourth and fifth games in a three-day stretch tomorrow and needed to conserve pitching.
Â
Brouwer got two quick outs in the top of the ninth and seemed poised to get the Eagles at the plate with a six-run deficit to overcome with their last three outs, but an error and a bloop single added three runs to the Warriors' tally and made the game seem that much more unreachable.
Â
However, Harmening came out of the game in between the eighth and ninth, so the Biola bats took advantage of it to get their lone run of the contest.
Julian Jarrard doubled to deep right field with two outs and was knocked home by a
Jeremy Barth single, also to right field.
Â
The Eagles fall to 14-24 (10-21 GSAC) with the loss and the No. 12 Westmont team bumps up to 29-8 (23-7 GSAC) to sit 1.5 games out of the conference lead. Tomorrow's doubleheader is back at Biola and begins at noon.
