Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The trend of high-scoring baseball games continues for the 2015 Biola Baseball team, unfortunately the Eagles came out on the wrong side of the offense in this one, falling to San Diego Christian, 8-17.
Â
The Hawks used the long ball as their primary weapon in this game's outburst of offense, as Lejon Baker went deep twice and Justin DiStefano added a blast of his own, two of which were of the three-run variety.
Â
Biola got one homerun of its own, just a solo shot, but it was a great moment as it came off the bat of
Tanner Swire. Swire is a four-year senior who will be celebrated at tomorrow's senior day, and it was just his second career big fly.
Â
Swire had a great day at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Another senior,
Paul Slater also had a strong afternoon, gathering three hits in his six at-bats and also adding two RBI.
Jeremy Barth and
Andres Rodriguez also had multiple hits, as the Eagles combined for 15 total hits, but left 12 runners on base as they failed to keep up with the big bashing of the visiting squad.
Â
The Hawks got on all of the arms trotted out by Head Coach
Jay Sullenger in this series-opener.
Garrett Picha got the start and was tagged for seven earned runs, eight total, and saddled with the loss (4-6).
Sean Rothfuss,
Jesse Yancosek and
Sean McCarrell were each used in relief and each of them surrendered at least one run to the Hawks.
Â
Gio Ochoa, who hurled a no-hitter against Biola the last time he was here, got the win after holding the Eagles to just three runs through seven innings of work. He walked eight in his no-hitter, but issued just one free pass today, compared to seven strikeouts. He got the win despite his relief crew allowing five more runs to Biola over the final two innings.
Â
Biola falls to 18-28 (12-25 GSAC) with the loss, while San Diego Christian moves to 10-36 (9-28 GSAC) with the victory. The Eagles need to win both games of tomorrow's doubleheader to salvage a season split in their six games with the Hawks. First pitch is at noon and the Eagles' five seniors will be honored between games.
