Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- It was wacky. It was wild. Runs certainly didn't come in short supply, but it all worked out in the end as Biola improves to 2-0 against CSU San Marcos this season with a 16-10 victory.
Â
The game seemed like it was on track to be another Biola blowout as the Eagles led 6-0 after their half of the second inning, on pace to record 27 total runs. Of course that pace was stymied, but not by much as the Eagles' offense took advantage of every opportunity allowed all game long.
Â
After a seven-run inning by the Cougars in the bottom of the third, this game became a whole new ballgame as Biola was staring at a 9-6 deficit.
Â
Clutch hitting in the top of the fourth led to Biola tying the game back up at nine.
Jeremy Barth began the scoring with a ground-rule double that scored
Julian Jarrard. The RBI was one of four on the day for Biola's left fielder.
Â
Another ground-rule double, this one by
Andres Rodriguez, continued the scoring in that inning, but it was definitely not all the production Rodriguez had in him this afternoon. The junior third-baseman went 5-for-6 with two doubles, resulting in five RBI and an additional three runs scored.
Â
His fourth-inning RBI was followed by a single off the bat of
Jimmy Gallarda that tied the game at nine. Gallarda was the third ultra-productive batter that suited up for Head Coach
Jay Sullenger in this one. He was 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored. He scored his one run following a triple in the second inning. It was the sophomore's third career double.
Â
Once it tied the game Biola never again trailed in this one as
Buddy Brouwer and
Sean Rothfuss found a way to neutralize the Cougars' offense and hold them to just one more run over the remaining six innings.
Â
The Eagles' production was not as effectively neutralized by CSUSM pitching. The Cougars trotted out six different pitchers to the bump in this one and the only one who could figure out how to stop this Biola lineup was the player who began the day at second base and got the last two outs of the inning in the ninth without surrendering a run.
Â
Biola took full advantage of the other arms, scoring twice in the sixth, twice in the seventh and three more times in the ninth to end with their grand total of 16 runs. This is their second-highest single-game run total of the season. Both of those top run totals came in the last three games as Biola's raised its team batting average from .261 to .271 in the process.
Â
The Eagles were not only able to score their bushel of runs because of their own productivity, but also because they were able to take advantage of a bunch of defensive miscues by the Cougars. Biola scored four unearned runs aided by the six CSUSM errors.
Â
Buddy Brouwer (2-0) picked up the win after four strong innings in relief and
Sean Rothfuss gets the very rare three-inning save, coming in when the game was just 11-10 and holding on for the big victory.
Â
Biola improves to 18-27 overall with the win and drops the Cougars to 26-13. The Eagles get back to the diamond on Friday to begin their final home GSAC series of the season, hosting San Diego Christian for a game on Friday and two more on Saturday.Â
