Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. --- The Firestorm got out to a scorching start before
Micah Beyer settled into ace mode, but his strong start went by the wayside as this game went to extra-innings and took a late single from Eugene "the RBI machine" Shin to get a 5-4 win over Arizona Chtistian.
Â
Beyer earned his second-straight series-opening start against a Golden State Athletic Conference opponent and took the stage to prove his potential to Head Coach
Jay Sullenger.
Â
Aside from two runs in the bottom of the first and an unearned run in the fourth, the freshman had no problems with the ACU lineup, pitching into the ninth inning, facing 34 batters and keeping Biola very much in the game late.
Â
After the early two-run deficit Biola posted a three-spot in the second inning to immediately climb back into the game and force the Firestorm's starter, Dean Jackson, back against the ropes.
Â
Andy Smith was the catalyst Biola needed throughout the game, getting the offense started with a leadoff single and stolen base in the second. He was pushed across by a
Eugene Shin single. Two more singles followed, helping
Andres Rodriguez trot across home plate to tie the game at two with two runners on a two outs.
Â
Paul Slater took advantage of the deuces wild situation, taking one for the team to load the bases for
Tanner Swire. It was Slater's team-leading 10
th hit-by-pitch of the season. Swire, Biola's batting leader, walked on five pitches to grab Biola's first lead of the afternoon.
Â
A passed ball allowed ACU to tie it up again in the fourth, where it would stay for quite some time as Beyer continued to hum along. ACU used four pitchers to make it to the ninth inning.
Â
One of those pitchers, JR Harrington, had the unfortunate task of facing
Julian Jarrard in the eighth inning. Jarrard entered the at bat 0-for-3 and was due for some fireworks. The Eagles' big man stepped into the 1-0 pitch and sent his conference-leading 11
th homerun of the year over the fence to hand Beyer and Biola a late 4-3 lead.
Â
That lead disappeared in the bottom of the ninth as the Firestorm found a way to get the first four batters of the inning on base, bringing in the game-tying run.
Daniel Jang came in after the first two batters reached and allowed the next two to reach before knuckling down at the precise right moment to strand the game-winning run at third base by getting three straight easy outs.
Â
Biola scored right away in extras as Smith again found a way to get himself to second base for Shin. Shin came through again, singling on the third pitch of the at bat to put Biola back in the lead. Shin's now got five RBI in the last two games and nine through the last six. He can thank Smith for half of those, as the senior DH now extends his team-lead to 32 runs scored.
Â
Jang set down the ACU hitters in order in the bottom of the 10
th, getting him his third win of the season and helping Biola improve to 16-26 (11-23 GSAC) and dropping Arizona Christian to 8-28 (8-26 GSAC).
Â
The teams are back to the diamond tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
