Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. --- There's offensive explosions, and then there is the atomic bomb that Biola dropped on ACU Firestorm Field on Saturday, winning 22-1 in the opener, before falling in game two, 3-7.
Â
The Eagles scored a new season-high with the 22 runs, crossing the plate more times in the opener than they've crossed the plate in the last five games combined.
Â
The offense came early and often as Biola worked a 12-0 inning through the first three innings of play, taking full advantage of the first two pitchers the Firestorm trotted out to the hill.
Â
The line for the first two was 2.1 innings pitched, 12 runs, seven hits, five walks and three hit-by-pitches.
Â
The offense came from up-and-down the lineup in the opener, but those first 12 runs were primarily keyed by a productive top of the order with five of the 12 being score by the Eagles' one through three hitters.
Â
The early runs came in support of
Jimmy Gallarda, who was absolutely fantastic on the bump in his second start of the season. The lanky right-hander went six full innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while holding ACU to its one run.
Â
The Eagles went onto score 10 more runs over the final six innings, scoring in all but two innings in the first game of the day.
Â
Biola did this damage on the strength of just 20 hits, all but four of which were singles. The rest came by way of hit-by-pitches (3), walks (9), stolen bases (5) and ACU errors (4).
Â
Center field was an especially productive position for Biola, as
Paul Slater scored his three runs and was later replaced by Collin Brecheen, who went 2-for-2 with two runs, a walk and a RBI.
Â
Timothy Glenn was another bench player who saw some action today and made the most of it, going 1-for-3, but driving in two of the 22 runs.
Tanner Swire continued his strong season with a 3-for-5 day where he had a team-best five RBI and scored three times.
Â
Six Eagles had multiple hits, 12 scored runs, eight tallied RBI, 11 reached base and five stole bases in an all-around fantastic display of offensive efficiency.
Â
Gallarda got the win to move to 1-2 on the season after two innings by
Sean Rothfuss and one by
Garrett Stevenson kept ACU to the 21-run deficit.
Â
Game two was a different story as Biola trailed throughout after ACU got out to a 6-0 lead through the first four innings and Biola could not quite figure out how to push runners home against the Firestorm's ace, Tommy Lay.
Â
ACU scored seven runs on its 10 hits while Biola mustered just three off nine hits in the seven-inning affair. The Eagles scored three times in the top of the sixth off a Slater groundout and
Julian Jarrard's 12
th homerun of the season.
Â
Biola wins the season series with Arizona Christian by taking four of the six games. The Eagles improve to 17-27 (12-24 GSAC), while ACU falls to 9-29 (9-27 GSAC). Biola stays on the road for an afternoon game at CSU San Marcos on Tuesday.
